Hey everyone! Just wanted to share a project I worked on over the summer, in the form of a Halo 3 Turret!
Always thought it would be cool to have one of these, and after watching a video on YouTube by William Jakespeare on how to make a working Gatling gun I thought the same idea can be applied to a Halo 3 Turret.

To start, I needed some reference images, so a quick image search helped out, and having the game open at the same time.

The majority of this was built with EVA Foam, and everything was pretty much eyeballed, no templates or anything like that. I started off by making the body of the gun.

Then I made the shields and hot glued them on.

Once they were on, I measured out how long the ammo belt needed to be and then added that on.

The barrel was pretty straight forward, three lengths of 2 inch PVC Pipe, glued onto a longer central PVC pipe of 3 inch diameter. This longer pipe would serve for the rotation later on.

To keep the barrels centered, 3 circles of equal diameter to the inside of the body were cut from MDF Wood. Three holes were then cut out for the large pipe to fit though. 3 steel rods were placed into each ring for stability. This made the prop heavy, but not so heavy that it can't be carried. lets say 'semi-realistic'.
Then its on to painting.

For the painting I used some cheap Nato Green I picked up at an Airsoft shop nearby.

So to make the barrels spin was easy enough. Or so I thought it would have been. In the video I mentioned earlier, the key to make the barrels spin is a drill. Thats all. So I went and got a cheap cordless drill which does the trick nicely. But I have a hollow pipe to attach it to. I had a few spare cabinet knobs hanging around that were about the right size, so with a bit of sanding I jammed it into the pipe, and inserted a small rod into it, which essentially became a drill bit. This is how I got it to spin.

You might be able to make it spin by putting a motor inside the cylindrical unit, which would improve the overall look as opposed to the drill sticking out the back. It looks good either way, but a motor might be a bit more subtle.

Yeah, after I made it I realised that something like that would help the look but it would also add a lot of weight, and the drill won't be that visible when its carried around, but if I decide to do another I'll definitely try it out!

Looks FANTASTIC!!!! You could always box in the drill so it appears to be part of the body. It wouldn't add that much weight to it and you would still have access to recharging the battery.

This would be a good idea if you don't want to use a motor

Hmm, I hadn't considered putting the drill inside the body, that is a very good idea, I may go back and work it in there somehow. Thanks for the advice! :)

wow! nice work!

now, I can't help noticing, but you've got lots of cool big boy toys in the background of one of your pics...
including 2 massive MC's and some awesome action figures...
