How Many Coats of Resin + Fiberglass?

I'm in the process of making something very similar to Halo Armor.

I've applied one layer of Resin, One Layer of Resin + Fiberglass and An Additonal layer of Resin.

So all up 3 Paint jobs.

How many will I need to get a good thick, strong coat on? So far it seems fairly strong, but I'm not sure what the golden rules are here..

There is no set number of how many layers you should apply. Basically apply it to the outside in coats until it doesn't bend, that can be anywhere from 2 to 5 coats. As for the fiberglass layers I think its the same principle, add more until it gets to your desired hardness. I am not sure but I think 2-3 layers of fiberglass is what people around here use.

How many layers of fibreglass you need depends on what fibreglass you're using. Heavier fibreglass means fewer layers are necessary to achieve a certain stability.

By the way, what did the doctor say? Any irreversible damage?

I usually do 2 to 3 coats of each depending on what is being built. 2 to 3 coats of resin on the outside gives a good sanding base, and 2 to 3 coats of fiberglass on the inside for strength, however if it is a part that sees a lot of wear and tear like shins or thighs I might put a few extra strips of fiberglass in those areas. Not a full layer but some extra support in areas that might get damaged. And for helmets I tend to rondo them I find it much easier to get all the details filled with rondo.

well, i did the same as you, and found that the parts did still have just a little bit of flex to them, so i would say add another layer of fibreglass and resin. it also depends what you going to do. if you want to roll around in it, you will need alot of layers, if you want to simply go to a fancy dress party, and spend most the time standing around, then you wont need so many layers.

For the record, I used one coat of resin on the outside before fiberglassing the inside with one layer of the Bondo brand packets of fiberglass cloth (not sure what weight that cloth is). My armor seems plenty enough strong.....

I did the same as Spitfire and I've participated in several parades, charity events and a 3 day convention without significant damage. However, the edges were wearing so I went around and re-enforced the them with Apoxy Scupt. An inch or two of auto-body filler ("Bondo") along the inside edges would do the same sort of strengthening.

From what I've done, the outside resin keeps the pep from warping and makes it stiff, the fiberglass keeps it from bending and makes it sturdy, and everything besides that (rondo, bondo, etc) adds strength and thickness.
