Hey guys.
So some of you might recognize me by username or by some of my artwork, some of us may have even met in person in or out of cosplay, but for those of you who don't know me, my name is Mike (I often go by Rookie) and I work with a program called Source Film Maker to create fan art for various games, namely but not limited to Halo.

Outside of its value in creating fan art, it's a great program to use to obtain reference material; in the past I've used it to take screenshots for artists in the past be it for commissions, requests, or because they simply needed a better angle on certain character details. In the past year however, one of my friends that I met con-going in the midwest, you may know him as NobleofDeath16, had requested some detailed screenshots from me when finalizing his ODST build, in addition to several other character and object references .

This thread will have the intention of doing just that for any and all potential builds. This can be based on simple request (character bodyhacks and references aren't difficult for me to do at all and take a fairly short time to set up and screenshot) and will be motivated by the goal of answering any questions regarding those difficult-to-reach details.

If you have any armor designs giving you trouble, any details you need to get a better look at, or just want to have some references as to what you want your specific build to look like (i.e. Armor Configuration, Color Schemes, Gear and Equipment) feel free to leave a post letting me know what you'd like to see.
My replies might not be timely, but I'll try to check back on this thread at least once a day and spend maybe an hour gathering references for the day's requests. As far as artwork goes; the references I'll be providing will only have the characters in a basic T pose or with basic limb manipulation/removal to give a better view of what you're looking for. I don't want to use this thread to advertise, but if you really want to have a piece done with the build avatar you're creating, we can talk about commissions elsewhere.

I hope to hear from some of you soon, it's a great feeling getting to see you work. In fact, if you end up working off my references, feel free to leave a link to your progression thread down below so I can see how it's coming along.

Thanks again!

Excellent resource! Any possibility of reference shots for the Reach Marine/Army troopers?
Absolutely! In fact, someone recently provided some Reach and Halo 3 armor models for troops that come separate from their body models, so that'll be easy. All depends on what youre going for.
let me know if you need specifics along the way.

I grabbed some of these so far showing off the core chest rig and general body shots along with attachments, backpacks, etc. If there's anything specific that you want to get a look at, feel free to ask!

How does this work? I've heard of source filmmaker, and I've seen plenty of examples of its use, but how are you able to do this? What's the process? Is it something that's easy enough to learn so that I can do it on my own?

Absolutely! It's free with any steam account and in this capacity it's pretty easy to use if you're trying to go for references. All you'll need is the models, which you can either install manually (I can provide links to tutorials on that, it's as simple as copy/paste) or via the SFM workshop.

It's super easy to get into, takes some practice to git gud at.

Hey Rookie,
I saw that you said that your responses may not be timely, if you would like, I can offer to help with this as well if you get overwhelmed. I, too, work with the program and have actually done the same thing in the Overwatch community. Not trying to take away your business or anything, so I can hang back until you feel the need to message for assistance.

I've actually used the program for at least three years, but stopped making images around 2 years ago after I just had a massive loss of ideas and inspiration. So, also, if you want any models, I can check my library as I have some stuff from Garry'smod.org that is custom installed on my machine (I won't lie, it's how I ended up with 21,000 models at least in my system, LOL)

I would actually love that. Likewise if you need any models, I can point you in the right direction and give you some pointers on some of the methods I have learned in the past four years of SFM experience.

Do you have any pages where you've posted work?

Awesome! I'll have to check it out and screw around with it.

Could you add these awesome references to the Bucket to Boots group build thread? We have a bunch of the in game references but having renders like yours will be extremely valuable as another look.

Done!

I'm working on some SFM artwork and I thought I'd take the time to post some references from my OC fireteam as inspiration insight into when I first started making my build way back when I began Halo cosplay. Let me know if you see anything interesting that you want me expand upon in any of these references.

The new marine files you got your mitts on are stunning! Even better so that they will now be at general public disposal on the Bucket to Boots build! This also gives many a handler many good options for their kit or even opens up the possibility of making suits tailored to repairing costumes and storing the needs for it while staying in the universe!

I just get chills thinking about this all!

On the topic of original characters, I kinda wanted to show off a recent design I did for the sake of a recreation and practice in kitbashing with some new, more modern looking operator models that I recently acquired. In the Halo SFM community, there are a few of us who like the classic bungie look to the Marines (my personal favorites are Halo 3 and Halo Reach designs) in that they have a more retro scifi look to them that's easily compatible with equipment used today. It's part of the inspiration behind my budget ODST build, but you'll have some examples of it in practice below. If you're familiar with and remember the Marine personnel at Corbulo Academy shown off in Forward Unto Dawn, you've already got a foot in the door.

Now I don't have a name for this guy yet, I just call him "The Martian" (same name as the Synthwave Mix I found on youtube--I liked the thumbnail and used it as a reference for his first images.)
I was inspired by my guy Dimi, who also uses SFM, to finally create a light-armored kitbash using these specific models. This isn't the first time I've used a modern look as a base for Marines, Army, or ONI. While Marty (that might actually stick) here, in my mind, serves a support role as an ETAC and requires less armor, below you'll see the extent to which simple combinations can go.

Let me know what you think, if you want me to provide any previews if you plan on working on a mix and match build for starters.

Next up I'll be posting some basic references of the Halo 3 Mark VI, some ODST strip-downs, and--Instagram's favorite--the Halo 5 base layer, or techsuit. If there's anything you want me to prioritize, or anything you can think of really, let me know.

Hello everyone! my name is Troy and I go by Slim Charles, Dimi on other platforms. I make 3D art in SFM also, Mike has definetly been a big inspiration to me and he's encouraged me to post some of my Halo work that you guys might find useful.

Is source film maker a tool that can let me get really odd angles and screenshots of the actual Halo models, or does it rely on fan-made remodels?

I have two questions, one could you possibly get me some decent photos of a Halo Cryopod, be it Wars, Halo 1 or Halo 4, and also, could you get a detail shot of the Re-entry pack if it's possible of either available
