I was thinking if we through together a mini power point video to explain how to get started.

Maybe a script like...

Slide 1.
Background: 405th Logo
Hey Welcome to the 405th!
Theres a few things you need to do in order to start making your very own Mjolnir Armor.

Slide 2.
Title: Materials required/needed
1) 110lb Cardstock found in local office stores for example Office max
2) X-acto knife found in local office stores for example Office max
3) Ruler
4) Hot glue gun Found in local crafting stores
5) Printer
6) Fiberglass cloth & Resin Found in hardware store
7) Respiratory Found in any hardware store
8) Sandpaper

Title: What do I do first?
First you need to download Pepakura Designer! Found here (Put link in)
Pepakura is a program where you are able to view your armor in 3d.
This is important when you want to make your armor fit you.

To begin go to the link and download the pack to your computer.

After downloading your armor open Pepakura Designer and open these files there.

Title: Scaling
Now you have the file what's next? Scaling is the most important part! When you scale it has to be the right size or else your armor will become to big or too small.
Thanks to Frizzlefry the most commonly used formula is listed below.
"Add up your height in inches. There is 12" to a foot. We'll use my hieght for the example. I am 5'11" which equals 71 inches.

Divide that by 86: 71/86 = .82558

Multiply that number times the scale it currently is, 30.342: 30.342*0.82558 = 25.04979

Now in Pepakura, go into 2dPatternWindow and select "Scale Up/Down by specifying value"

Under scale, put in the new scale (for this equazion its 25.04979). Do this for all of your pieces to be symmetrical."

Title: Printing your work.
Now you got your scaling done it's time to print your work.
First make sure you use 110lb cardstock. Why do you ask? Normal paper is flimsy and won't retain it's form.
Make sure all pieces are within the border of each page.
When printing make sure you set it to Letter before you print.

So ya that's a small sample simple and to the point but if I'm missing something please add in. I would think having a power point presentation would be a lot easier to present info. I think having new members go through this process before entering the real forums would mostly eliminate most common questions.

I believe the questions should tested on how to use the search button and other basics info like how to scale your armor.

Or a small software used to calculate scale for different model. Like you have a scrolling menu where you choose the model you want. You enter your size and the software adds like one inch by itself for the fiberglass.

Would be sooo useful and the noobies would love it

i admit, thats a good idea, and there are plenty of ideas like that too.

but honestly, think like a noob. would you read it? would you just think, oh look, some gay powerpoint presentation, LETS SKIP IT!"

so far there has only been one solution to this, and thats having "If you agree to all of this, do NOT click the "I Agree" button and go to the next page"
right in the centre of the disclaimer, so we can tell if they read it.

Can you make a macro in power point? I never tried it before.

Zen your also underestimating the power point presentation. That's the main reason why I purposed it. I had the mind set of the quickest way to get info in under 10 minutes. Having everything you need to know as a reference in one spot easily printed or saved to a computer would help them greatly. Also you can play wave formats of the halo theme songs to keep them interested or play our voices in so they won't lose interest and also follow along. By confining everything in one spot would stop confusion, random questions, and answer a lot of how to?. It's just my thoughts on matter.

Although you are right some people will just skip it, but for those who want to build will watch it and keep it as a referance.

I like the idea ODST. Of course I think we do need a few checks in place (the unclick this box) in the middle of a page works well for other sites I've been on, and a short quiz at the end would definitely help imo.

Here's some of my take on the issue. We can subject new members to "Death by Powerpoint" 'til we're blue in the face. We can have them take quizzes. We can have them check and uncheck boxes until their eyes bleed. The question I ask is: Are we accomplishing our goal? Reading rules and taking some quiz does not always equal comprehension, or compliance. I, for one, cringe slightly when I see a new thread in the Noob forum. I am always prepared for the typical noob questions that would be easily answered by lurking a bit and reading stickies. When you have impatient 14-16 year olds looking to build armor, you're going to get these kind of results. Do we need to have new members' posts cleared by a moderator before being posted?

There are a few members right now who have their posts moderated in that manner because of the warning % they have. Unfortunately, it's very time consuming for the mods to do this for even one person =\

Again, you can powerpoint and checkbox to death, but you can't legislate giving a damn. Some people will just not pay any attention to all the stuff we put in front of them. It may help stem the tide some, though. I think the idea of forum specific moderators screening the first five or 10 posts by a new member has merit.

That sounds like a plan. It would definitely be a good reference. I think a guide to the forums at sign up is a good idea, but having lots of quizzes and such is a waste of people's time. The lurkers will lurk and the 14 year olds will post their topics asking inane questions regardless of whatever you put in front of them. I'm sorry if I came across a bit harsh. I need to be careful when I post from work while I'm in "supervisor" mode. Again, sorry.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before...
But I thought maybe instead of having people get annoyed by newbies (like me) who had no idea, when they first came to the forum, that the stickies contained almost all information we would ever ask silly questions of in the noob forum, there could be a feature where when a newbie signs up for the forum, instead of giving them access to the forum, right after sign-up we could automatically direct them to a thread which contains all rules and regulations, but also in considerably large text, something along the lines of READ ALL STICKIES FOR TUTORIALS AND ITS LIKE BEFORE POSTING QUESTIONS IN THE FORUMS.
Then redirect them/allow them to gain access to the forums only after they've read that thread (or so we hope they will.).
Only then can you go on to bite their heads off in peace if they make a new thread asking silly questions that have been answered only a thousand times before, because then they can't say that they didn't know to look in the stickies .


And please don't bite my head off if this is an absurd suggestion.
I'm only mentioning it because I have seen it done in other forums.

Sunni hun, this entire thread has pretty much been a discussion about just that LOL! Something is gonna be worked out, but it itsnt fail proof. Theres no way to get a noob to sit there and make them read rules upon rules and soforth. Like Ive meantioned before: It's like trying to herd cats. Its impossible.
