This is going to be a short thread for a quick side project I did, but I thought it'd be interesting to document.

As a fan of the originals and a fan of the closed playtest I got to take part in, I'm hyped for the new Marathon game! With NDA's ending and more trailers coming out, I can try out making some Marathon props! I had to start off with the CE Tactical Sidearm. It's a basic weapon in the game and has an iconic name.

I made the base model in 1 night.

I wanted to be able to capture all the sharp and industrial decals on the Sidearm, but with the details being so small, It seemed hard to tape off and I'm worried about waterslides not being accurate enough. I decided to go with multicolor printing as a solution. I could make all the dimensions and placements of the decals perfect in CAD software (Solidworks in my case). On top of that, the new Marathon has 3d printing, specifically bio printing, as a big theme of the game. So a prop almost finished right out of the printer felt fitting for the theme. I've never modeled for multicolor printing before, and had to do some tests to get that to work.

I found that if a section was extruded inward or outward by 0.01mm, it was enough of an offset where the slicer will recognize that as a separate surface to fill, but smaller than the tolerances on a printer, so it will print flush.

Here's my test print that I made to have various random details.

I then went back into Solidworks and added all the decals onto the 3d model.

My printer is a Prusa XL with 2 tool heads, so I could only do 2 colors at a time. I broke up the model into 13 parts to try to get as accurately colored prints as I could.

Here's the first test print I did. The prop was a little too small and some details wouldn't highlight in the slicer. Some of my filament also shipped wet, giving messy results.

I scaled up the model, adjusted some details, and ordered a filament dryer. Here's the final results!

I didn't know you had a 2 toolhead XL! This looks awesome!
Thx! I actually just got the Prusa XL the other week. I've had an original Ender 3 for 5 years and an Ender 5 plus for 3. Figured it was time for an upgrade. I mainly got the 2 tool heads so I could do TPU prints with PLA supports. Might as well do small projects like this too!
