never heard of duck tape being used to make a self mold. have made a few molds for art class... g/l and hopefully this thread dont end up like the last one... but the all in one pack doesnt have a good female file... they are all messed up...

The guys over at the Hunters Lair have always use ducktape dummies as a model of them selves so they could make there laytex predator skin. Ive been wanting to find a tut on how to make it for my pred project. A very good idea for armor, making pred skin or what ever. Hicky dogs right, you can do everything with duck tape, even make a real to scale sail boat, no lie. :) Did you get the idea from the Hunter's lair or somewhere else, Angel?

Hi Angel nice work on your first set of armor. I found this thread on here
Female Mk Vi Suit and it has Pepakura Files that may help good luck :)

Clay is the best option, most likely air dry clay.
You also have to make sure you post WIP pics unlike your last one.

True, Mythbusters actually made a working one!

Anyhow, I'm getting out of the subject, I'm pretty sure that duck tape cost less than clay.

I made a pretty accurate and reasonably inexpensive body mold out of poultry netting (Chicken wire) and duck tape. I think it cost me roughly $30.00 in materials.

I then fiber glassed the entire thing and mounted it onto a 3/4 inch section of plywood with removable caster wheels.
Indestructible body cast on the cheap, can't beat it.

ithicas wife sculpted a femal chest and back last year and did a vid look up ithica on youtube to find it

This is soo cool i hope it works out well.im trying really hard to make one as well for halloween but i couldnt find a pep file with the right chest armor..and pepakura hurts my brain =/ good luck!

Yep... after I seriously thought about this.. I think instead of using foam I am just going to cast it.. sculpt it with clay first.. but first i have to make myself the duck tape dummy first XD... I need to figure out more info regarding casting. For starters I am already a good sculpture..so I am pretty sure this is going to turn out awesome if i can afford it all.

Now thats what I call progress pics!! You have to keep this up if you don't want this thread to end up like the last one.

I have no experience with clay, so I can't give you any tips. I just wanted to leave some positive feedback and give you thumbs up! Also your first armor looks really nice for the short time span you had. Good luck with the clay!

with oil clay, you want to use mineral spirits or paint thinner. Brush it on and let it sit for a few seconds then you can either keep brushing it until its smooth or use your hands to work it. The water is only used when your applying the clay, it gets the clay warm and softens it up a bit.

Thanks but does anyone know how to smooth the oil clay? I trird alcohol, hot water, and various tools. What.am I doing wrong?

Try mineral spirits on your fingertip or a cotton swab. I believe alchohol is actually used to help the clay maintain its' shape, and you can apply it after you've smoothed the sculture with mineral spirits. Mineral spirits are available in the paint section of any hardware store.

*Edit - Posted roughly the same time as post above. I agree with it :) "

Thanks guys. I was also told to try using a special type of clothe. Whats the cloth called? Someone also told me to heat oil into a hundred and ten degrees and dip the whole oil clay inside wear special gloves to prevent burning. It still sounds scary. It suppose to.soften the clay more effectly and that is how the pros do it I was told. But that still sounds really scary and dangerous. Ideas?

To get the clay smooth I used a seriers of tools followed by a coating of 91% rubbing alcohol. The tools I used were different types of rakes. Start off with the larger tooth rakes and then keep going to the smaller, finer tooth rakes. Then after I did that I used a kidney shaped piece of smooth flexible metal (im sure there is a name for it, its an actual clay tool I just dont know its name) and wiped that all over the sculpture. At this point it was very smooth and I could have left it alone, though I heard and then tried rubbing alcohol on it. The rubbing alcohol actually 'melts' a very thin layer of the clay and get rid of fingerprints and other minor defects. You need to use a rubbing alcohol with a high %. I was told to use 90%, though the drug store I went to had 91% so I bought that.

wow. I knew there were alot of uses for duck-tape but, not making a full size dummy.

I used this method for my armor stand, works great for fitting the pieces together without having to have it on you. Good luck on your build, while I didn't comment on the other one (seemed to get a little out of hand over there) I gotta say, for your first armor build, and the time you had to complete it it looked pretty good. Pretty much everyone here is right about the clay method, sculping to your body it's gonna be a perfect fit and you'll know what problems you may encounter with scale before you have to make big changes. Take your time and it's gonna be awesome!
