Recently, I decided to go back to my idea of creating my own boots this year. However, during the process, I realized that I screwed myself over after the 2nd step. Allow me to explain.
In order to create the silicone mold of the outsole, I had to calculate the amount to make it. I had to calculate the cubic inches of the 3d printed object by its length, width, and height. Then I had to do the same thing to the mold wall that I was making and subtract the volumes from it to get the difference. Then to get the right amount of mold, I had to divide the amount from the subtracted value by the specific volume. Since I am using Smooth-On Mold Star 30, I had to make sure that the amount was enough to cover the 3 print.
First attempt ended in failure.
I didn't measure enough.
The second attempt, however, revealed a couple of things.
Number 1, I actually didn't plan a head far enough about how I was using the urethane rubber to make the outsole. I was going by a youtube video that someone actually made a outsole for a sneaker. The problem about that is that he was under a climate controlled room. I was attempting to make it in the summer heat. That shortened the pot life of the product and it was already started to cure.
Number 2? Not enough holes. In a project like this, I should have made the mold setup where I had 3 holes down the middle of the outsole to pour the liquid in. Also, I made the registration keys so long that I had some difficulty to set it in place before the pouring of the liquid. Finally, the air vents. I did not place enough air vents to let the air out.
So what now? Since this has been a failure, I have no choice but to start over again. That does mean that I will have to order some more Mold Star 30 and try again at a later time. I was suppose to have it ready by Momocon this year, but I could not make that deadline due to outside factors. At this rate, I will have to have it ready by Halloween at least. If I make it by DragonCon, it will be a miracle. I still have some time before then.
However, I also have been trying to make another costume in tandem and I will have to see if I can get majority of it done by DragonCon. I just need to finish the rest of the costume from Power Rangers Turbo. I am almost done with it.
Until next time, see ya around!
