The Seriously Ultimate Assault Rifle Build

Well I don't know the real sizes of that weapon but... Holy Crap that is one big gun. Great Job on the pep work and excellent job on recording all the sounds. You are one amazing person.

We got the dimensions for the rifle off the Halo wiki, which listed the total length of the rifle at 88cm (34.6 inches) so that what we scaled the rifle to. I'm not entirely sure if thats including the barrel or not? If that length does include the barrel then thats one error on our part. Another thing we came across was weapons scaling in game. If a regular human soldier is running around with a rifle and you take that rifle (you being master chief) the weapon automatically scales up by 10% so it suit MC (not 100% on that, just heard it 2nd hand) if, however, that's the case then just another thing we have to tweak.

But all in all a good experience. TERRA finally did a pep :p i didn't burn myself on glue (much) and we both discovered, even though its only paper... Holding that rifle makes you feel like a god! :D

First off great work guys... everything looks amazing and you sound like you have a solid plan.....now for my thoughts... the gun seems a lil big. i would look at pics of current soldiers using m-4s. and use those dimensions to make the weapon look as realistic as possible. you would have to think they fielded theses weapons for spartans and marines and they use these weapons because they were not extremly heavy or bulky and could be carried around effeciently... again im not hating on the caliber of workmanship on this build just the dimensions. i mean no disrespect just an opinion. in the end if it makes you happy run with it! good luck and i look forward to more follow ups.

Most firearm dimensions include the length of the gun + barrel unless specified.

Haha, did it ever hit you while buidling that rifle, it might be oversiezed? I just hate that feeling when you have to redo something

According to the halo wiki:

Technical specs:

*length: 88 centimeters (34.6 inches) - includes barrel

*length of barrel: 60.7 centimeters (24 inches) - I would imagine that is from the tip to the front of the receiver

I hope that helps.

Well we stuffed the size up, but it was good practice, and we got one god sized arm cannon in the end!! :D

Amen. Definitely going to keep this pep regardless. Finish it and mount it on a wall under a sign saying " In case of alien invasion, break glass and kick arse" :D

Ok, I'm currently in talks with a company in Taiwan, negotiating the purchase of 100 chips (to start with) and a programmer to record the weapon sounds onto. After sacrificing a few to prototyping, I'll have a plug and play circuit that will allow anyone to add high quality sound effects to their gear.

With a bit of community support (and a tiny extra cost for the time involved in recording and pre-processing the sounds), I don't see why custom sounds couldn't be programmed either.

I can record up to 21 seconds at 6kHz sample rate, or proportionately less at up to 22kHz sample rate.

The chips can also accommodate up to 126 individual sound files which are then grouped into up to 12 groups (basically sound macros).

Once I've got a schematic sorted and the prototypes made, I'll be able to figure out a decent price for the final item.

[EDIT]

Just got the Strobe PCB's back today. There's a few grammatical errors ^-^ " but I'll fix them up before production...

Have to experiment to find the best sample rate vs usable seconds.

Let me know when you have the strobe circuit working. Isn't pin 3 on the optoiso supposed to be NC?

You are correct. It seems I missed that in my rush to get it done for the last batch of PCB production.. Nothing a blob of solder can't fix...... :D

I'll be testing the strobe hopefully tonight (just need a few more capacitors) and if it works, then I smile. Then do the robot with the strobe in a darkened room. :D

Once it's all good, I'll fix the PCB and do some rerouting of the tracks to optimise it a bit, then it's onto the micro controller.

Update!!

Special package straight from Taiwan. :D

I got 100 sound chips, a programmer, software for the programmer and a demo board. Now I just have to design a PCB and finish editing all the sounds and I'll be able to start churning out sound modules for you guys.

Also, I'll be picking up the last capacitors for the strobe tonight on my way through dropping of a set of HKS headers for welding from my mates import Corolla Levin. They had to be ordered in and then the long weekend for Easter happened etc etc.

Metalfr3q has also made a closer to actual scale pep of the assault rifle, which has allowed us to better work out how to construct the rifle.

The stock will be made from laminated MDF sheets, with the outer most pieces extending all the way down the side of the gun. The top, end and bottom of the gun will probably be pepped and fiber glassed, with actual rubber used in the grips.

One more iteration of the rifle to get the size spot on (the latest is just a little too small) and it's onto the actual final construction.

Dibs on one of the rifles once you start putting them into production, are you thinking of shipping kits or full rifles?

Epic. Its great to see someone who knows what their doing and is making something incredible with that knowledge. Keep it up. I can't wait to see more of your build.

We are toying with the idea of making some moldings, and will be making 3 or 4 rifles to start with (two for us and one or two for making molds etc).

If we make the molds, then we will probably offer them in kit form (Ie you solder the electronics together, paint the bare gun how you want, stuff everything inside etc) Otherwise, we'll release the full build procedure once it's all done so you can make your own from scratch.

You will have to buy the pre-programmed chips though to make it all work, but they'll be cheap. :)

That sounds great, as long as I have the money I'll be one of the first buyers :)
