I'm also unsure of the two button like parts just below that, I need to take a good look at it in game and see if they're buttons or recessed areas... unless someone knows already?

One of these days I'll do the wall mounted part for it as well :)

Here is another reference image that may answer some of your questions if you don't have time to look it up in game.

[attachment=13775:ODST_Medical_Pack.jpg]

On each side, they are button. In the center, it seems to be a tab at the same level as the rest of the face with a recessed contour.

Give it time and you'll get there, I've only been working in Solidworks for about nine months and 3D modeling in general for less than three years so if you're determined and have the time to spend learning it wouldn't take too long to pick up some skills :) Also taking classes would help, all my 3D knowledge is basically self taught but if I took some classes I probably would have picked stuff up quicker.

Starting early is a good idea too ;) I've been building basic prop stuff since I was about 12 or 13 I think (it's far too long ago for me to remember) and proper replica props for maybe five years. Though I have been building/rebuilding stuff for most of my life, it just wasn't anything too spectacular :lol

hello

i got your terminal pep file off your flickr page and started making one of my own. hope you don't mind. :) i have the model printed on regular paper and glued to some really hard cardboard. i was thinking of fiberglassing (sp?) the model and making a frame of metal around a the lian li motherboard thingy to fit inside. i will be using modern computer parts. i was thinking of putting a C=64 inside but i would have been to complicated. anything i should think of? its going to be my project in school so i have access to pretty much every tool you can think of.

thanks in advance

what ur doing is really nice, you have talent and it really shows in your work. this is the type of stuff that i hope to be able to do when im older. just wondering how do you convert the 3d models into actual models? is it like through a machine or something?

That's fine, anything I've got up for download people should feel free to use for whatever :)

I can't really offer any advise or tips really, mine never got past the prototype stage. A metal frame would be a good idea, would give a good solid base to build off of. Fiberglassing should work too, personally I would go with sheet plastic (or metal) just because it's mostly a square build and there would be little warpage.

I was just going to use my old Mac Mini and a smallish LCD screen in mine but a purpose built PC might be the way to go and you'd have plenty of room for stuff inside :)

Thanks :) As for building physical pieces from the 3D models, it depends on what you've got access to and/or how much money you want to spend really.I've got a small 3D printer that I can use to 'print' some of the smaller models out in ABS plastic. They also have much larger versions that basically do the same thing but on a much larger scale that you can use to print things like helmets or weapons.

For my larger models I'll be doing most of them on a large CNC mill and other stuff I'll build by hand from bits of PVC pipe and such... all depends on the project :)

what do you use to make these

You mean the 3D models? Mostly I use Solidworks but I also use a combination of Cinema4D and Modo. There are others too but I don't use them much.

Had to render this model out to check on a possible problem and figured I'd throw the renders up here.

With and without the inner helmet piece:

4243077075_c21f25cd9a_m.jpg 4243077411_c93c47c9f2_m.jpg

You can see the problem area, there are two nasty seams running along the inner helmet piece that I need to fix. It won't be a problem when making the physical version but it may look crappy in the renders Took the better part of the day just to get the ear pieces right, need better front and top views so I can get to work on the rest of it.

For those not familiar, this is what the finished helmet looks like:

4240966793_5d9ca0de48_m.jpg

It's one of the FROGS from MGS4... I've wanted to build the helmet for ages but there aren't any decent references out there so I've had to wait until I got a PS3 to play the game on, which I have now so there's references-a-plenty!

You can find them here if you need them, there's more coming too.

Also FYI I'm moving most of my current references and any future ones to that Flickr account above, that way I don't clutter my other account ;)

Thanks :D

I was just going to drop them in my Halo weapons thread but thought I better keep things organized so...

Here's a few shots of the new bolter model:

4266655766_1a2d86f707_m.jpg

If you can, view the "Bolter close-up" image at the original size, that's the actual size it was rendered. I didn't resize it just so people could see some of the detail and texture.

And these are a couple of early WIP renders of some props from .hack//LINK (which I know nothing about but thought they looked cool)

Edit: Just built another 40K model, a Thunder Hammer. Took an hour or so at the most:

4267531045_aeceedc9fd_m.jpg

Still needs a couple of skulls and once the bolter finishes rendering I'll start on this.

Totally wish that was a pep file

I wouldn't want to even think about pepping this thing, it'd be insane :lol What doesn't really come across in the render is that the thing is almost a meter tall, it's pretty massive

You could build one of of PVC and styrene without too much trouble, hardest part would be the head and that shouldn't be too bad. I might have to try building one I think :D

Couple of renders of the hammer:

As I type I'm modeling the Chainsword and will probably do a Lasgun next.

Slight change of plans, I did start the chainsword but it got annoying so I moved to some other stuff.

First is the new Storm Shield model:

4276256052_07bbd5295b_m.jpg 4276350454_3b17092271_m.jpg

Still need to add the skull to the center, would like to build this to go along with the hammer below but I'll have to wait and see about that.

Also broke down the Thunder Hammer head and removed some details like fillets (which are still there in this pic):

4270363135_c8dc390ddc_m.jpg

Then converted to drawings with dimensions that I printed out at full size and transferred that to my 3mm HIPS sheet:

4272534706_58b9f6c0ab_m.jpg 4272991248_b00706ef12_m.jpg

Then glued and welded it all together to form the basic head structure:

4274955190_8da990610f_m.jpg 4274955326_9c2315c65a_m.jpg

I'm almost finished with the head now, just need to pick up a few different sizes of PVC pipe for the handle and start putting it all together. There's some bondo work which I'll need to do and some leather work for the grip but other than that there's not a lot left. Then it's just a matter of painting and photographing so it can go along side the 3D version in my portfolio :)

Thinking a lot about modeling some 40K armour at some point, something different though like Terminator armour or a hero of some sort... something stupidly big. I'll have to choose and pick up a figure or two for reference I think.

Got my PVC the other day, one size pipe was wrong so I haven't been able to do some of the detail pieces but the basic handle is going good:

4287290904_3be8dcf4da_m.jpg 4286552309_d57ecb8581_m.jpg

4287291254_2cb6915c3f_m.jpg 4286552621_9787862079_m.jpg

4286551501_5399d34451_m.jpg

I need some 50mm dowel to stuff down the center, I'll then cut the grip section of the PVC out (between those two ring pieces) so I can have a slightly thinner grip to wrap with leather.

I also need some bondo to finish of the head and fill a few holes elsewhere and find random greeblies for details. Oh and I need some small diameter PVC for the side add-on thing where the power cables hook up (which I also need) and the correct size pipe for the neck details. A couple days work at least but it's pretty cool up close :)

Also, some more Warhammer 40K models in-progress:

4280387987_65260a7f9e_m.jpg 4280473037_4580b6b7a3_m.jpg

4281235416_9dabf98992_m.jpg

The Rhino is actually 1:1 scale, coming in just under seven meters long... just try and pep that :p:lol

The power axe I may build to go with the hammer, not sure yet.

Gauntlet, elbow, butt plate, shoulder, back detail, and Iron Halo. Most are still in progress, currently it's just a portfolio piece but eventually I'll use it to make some armor.

And finally, some Thunder Hammer progress and the start of the Crozius Arcanum

4308323898_828e797cc4_m.jpg 4307543731_606485bd14_m.jpg

The Crozius is on the left in the second pic.

3D models of the parts of the hammer that I used to create drawings that I then used to build the actual prop

Still waiting on another piece of PVC and some leather to wrap the grip with, then it's a little bondo work and sculpting a couple of skulls.

There are more photos of the Thunder Hammer progress in here:

I still need to get some photos of the purity seal I've sculpted and some other stuff...

You think it's bad for you, just imagine what it's like on the computer making this stuff :p:lol

I use Solidworks almost exclusively now for my 3D work, I tried Blender a while back to see what it was like but it drove me crazy and I didn't get far. I'm not much for traditional modeling though...

Working on a couple of new things.

This is a very early render of a model of Serge Graystone from Caprica

4357366907_447f18f84f_m.jpg

Finally got some half decent reference pics so I'm reworking most, if not all of the body.

I did this in about 20mins this morning, one of the Doomsday devices from Futurama

4356754977_bca316570a_m.jpg 4357502062_6f8c84b4b5_m.jpg

Not sure if I'm going to continue with this but here's some pics of an Iron Man model that I was working on

4338785019_dddbf6b8ab_m.jpg 4338785133_3c42a3b50d_m.jpg

This is based on some photos of a sculpt that was done for Marvel a while back.

I forgot to add this the other day

4315063062_03f4f0b2bc_m.jpg

I did that as an example of why these armor models wont work with pep (unless you're insane ;) )

and I thought I'd throw a couple of pics of the figure I'm building the armor off of

4296356385_75b5449d51_m.jpg 4297102612_cb8f518b3e_m.jpg

No photos at the moment but I'm working on finishing up the last of the major construction on the Thunder Hammer now, should be ready for paint soonish. I'll post photos of that once all this glue cures and I sand some things.

Working on my MJOLNIR again too, trying to tidy it up a little before I have to use it again in a few months. I'll post those photos in the appropriate topic sometime soon. Also working on a few new costume ideas that I can take with me to Dragon*Con next year (or this if I can afford it, though next is more likely), hopefully they'll turn out well :D
