two questions about creating molds and detailing

So i think i'm gonna start creating molds of helmets and stuff i make so that way i can always recast them if i make mistakes or don't like the results with painting, and so i don't have to keep making the same pep model if i want to try again. So i have some questions about it. This may seem noobish, so sorry in advance.

1. i see a lot of people who make molds and they use clay as their models. i'm not exactly great with clay, because i'm extremely OCD about creating very even and symmetrical surfaces so i'm not gonna use clay if i can avoid it. so if i make a pep model and use resin and bondo, smooth it out and stuff, can i create the mold using the bondo model? or do i have to use clay?

2. this second one is about the bondo model. how do i create the details in the helmet? because regular sanding isn't gonna do that, so what do i use? are there any tutorials/videos, or just some straight up tips on how to do it?

sorry again for the noob questions.
