Would Scotch Tape Work?

Hey guys,

I am new to Pepakura. I was wondering if this would work and if anyone else has done this. Instead of crazy glue and super glue, I been using regular scotch tape. So far everything is looking correct and being held together. My plan is to start applying crazy glue when I am all done. Has anyone tried this and was it successful? I am creating Iron Man helmet.

I havent ever heard of tape working for anyone. I personally use hot glue. Its cheap, easy, fast and forgiving. Thats my recommendation!!

Tacky glue works great for me. Though i myself have not heard of tape being used before....maybe your the first! Good luck either way!

I've never seen anyone use regular tape, but I have seen duct tape and to make a long story short it did not work. I'd highly recommend hot glue when you get a chance. Aside from the threads it's great.

in some cases it dissolves whereas in others not. But for reliable reassurance hot glue is the best bet, you can glue, melt offf and re-attach if you mess up and its cheap.

The adhesive that holds the paper to the tape may get melted off when or if you resin.

I suggest you just glue your pieces together. It would save you the hassle of having to glue every single pieces even though you already built it.

You might also run the risk of having the tape rip your pieces up when you remove the tape.

Just my two cents.

that above all pony is the most important.

Thanks for the replies,

I'm not planning to keep it all taped up at the end. I was going to apply super glue and remove the tape one by one. Now I am looking into Hot Glue. I have both Crazy Glue ( one with the brush) and Super Glue from Lociite, they both take a while to stick, so reason why I am using the tape. Also with those gllue, it hardens the paper which I sometimes need a curve to it.

Thanks for the recommendations! I will snap a pic of my progress when I come back from work.

Just to add my two cents too, I also use hot glue, but if Im going to fill a part with some extra hot glue for reinforcement, then I tape it up to hold the edges together... when you reinforce with the hot glue, the glue on the tabs will re-melt, and if something isnt holding it on... it will come undone...

for all of you who haven't seen tape used before, my armour is made using only tape. In my personal opinion, scotch tape works really badly, it peels off if you leave it sitting around for too long. I use masking tape, easy to use, easy to pull off when mistakes are made. :) Keep in mind that I am using only 90-110 pound cardstock, if I tried using glue on it it would just start wilting. But my girlfriend ran out of masking tape and had to use scotch tape... lets just say we had to go over it again. (Pics of what I am talking about will be on my thread soon!)

I have used cello-tape before, it works for sure. However, It doesn't always stick well for long so I would only use it if you plan to finish the whole pep in about a week. I just resin a few thin layers on the outside then slosh loads on the inside to strengthen and its fine. Its a viable method but I would recommend glue as it sticks the tabs down more effectively.

Am the only supporter of the tape method? Yay I'm eunuch! :p

I wouldn't recommend Scotch Tape but I do recommend Masking Tape. I find that is holds the piece together long enough to resin and fiberglass the insides of my pieces. Once the piece dries after glassing the inside, I remove the tape from the outside and resin the outside.

Things to note:

Masking tape works really good for a clean alternative to super glue.

There is no mess

There is no smell

It's easier to use because you can adjust the tape on pieces very easily.

However. The wax on the outside of Masking Tape does repell/resists the resin so you have to remove it from the piece which takes time. So the time you made up on the assembly is slowed down here.

I like the Tape Method because I can adjust pieces easily even days after I assemble something. And if I really have to I can cut the seam with a knife and retape the piece together. After all the inside of the piece is going to hold the shape and the out side is going to be bondo'd for detail so perfection isn't key during the Pep assembly stage.

I do plan to test Smooth On slushing on a taped piece in the future.

The first attempt was a failure but I learned a lot about the tape during that epic loss!

Hope this helps!

Ive tried tape. it does NOT work. it wont hold its shape through resin and bondo. the whole thing falls apart at the seams (literally)

i use loctite superglue. its more expensive than hot glue ($2.50 for .18oz! ouch!), but those dang threads that hot glue leaves afterward were more than enough to push me over the edge. Its worth it at the end of the day. the pep looks cleaner. a whole halo costume can be finished with about 5 bottles of the stuff, and even less if youre really sparing.

I did the scotch tape method on my first pep sadly it didn't make it through the resin stage. If you are going to tape it then glue it my suggestion would be to save yourself money in the long run and just glue it. I have been using hot glue since my second pep and it is wonderful.

Personally, I only use scotch tape to temporarily reinforce a difficult connection while the glue dries. I use Elmer's white glue (the best IMO). When the glue is dried, I carefully remove the scotch tape.

I use scotch tape all the time. but then paper mache over it to cover it for resining or bondoeing. whichever you want to do.

When i was a beginner, i used scotch tape to hold together my pep models, including my MK IV helmet. It made me regret that hard work, when i fell apart int eh fiberglass stage. From then on, i have been using my trusty tacky glue.

I would never use scotch tape in a papercraft. It doesn't hold together well, and it's more expensive than elmer's glue, based on the amount of things you can bind.

Besides, the tape falls apart ever so easily when wet. Expect resin to tear it apart. Not to mention the force you impart upon the piece when you pack fiberglass into it.

Should I pay my $1.03, now, too, and buy my freedom?
