Cujo's ODST Armor Begins!

Hugh....

Thanks for the look... I fear people may be getting bored with my thread :p

As for the pepped helmet... I think I am going to put 3-4 more coats of the styrospray on it... and see just how stiff it gets....
I have thought that rondo on the inside might be a very good option. Supposedly bondo of this won't hurt anything....
so surely rondo on the inside won't either... It is all just a experiment and I am trying to find something that will work for me....
I am not a fiberglasser... but I'm trying.

I'll keep you posted... I have also started to pep a few other pieces of the chest armor.... the thighs for this build... and the
gauntlets kinda scare me... but we will cross both at some point....

thanks for looking as always!

Cujo

Na, I don't think that its because anyone's losing interest. I think there has just been an overall lull in the forum activity lately. Maybe because people are going back to school and are stuck not being able to work on anything (like this guy)

If you decide to rondo you may be adding quite a bit of weight to the helm so be careful. I stopped using rondo/body filler altogether. Now I use smooth cast 320 to harden the parts, it works great. Sometimes I use fiberglass cloth if I feel that the plastic is too thin. But rondo is a very good hardening method.

I suggest not even using body filler to smooth the helmet, just sand the styrospray then use glazing spot putty over curves and folds to get you the nice finished look. :)

The gauntlets bothered me too, but once you build one you'll be set to do the other in no time haha.

Hey Cujo! Any new news? Id love to hear how the styrospray is working on the foam with multiple coats. Hope you get an update soon!

nice build so far and i have noticed not many people are posting on the good builds anymore. its all on stupid stuff now a days but i cant wait to c this done like some1 said t me us odst's need to stick together

Ok guys....

Here is low-down on how the build is going....

Stryospray is going ok... but it has been rather cold here in Wisconsin of late so I have been holding off doing much with it till maybe Spring or
some warmer weather... I am also thinking of going with a sprayer myself instead of trying to roller it on... that seems to put the coats on much too think
and it seems to take forever for it to dry.... So on that part... still working with it.... just going slowly....

On the armor build... I am still working on pieces. I am pepping chest pieces as test subjects before starting them in foam... I will get pics posted soon...

Helmet wise.... I decided to pic up a helmet from Hugh Holder, who was running a pull or two from his molds.... I got my helmet the other day and we both thought it would be big enough... unfortunately.... too snug! It is SO tight at my cheekbones, that I can't talk with the helmet on... I feel like Rookie :p

I must say, regarding the quality of the helmet... Hugh did a AWESOME job on this resin helmet... I got more then my money's worth with it...even though it is too tight for me, I am going to go ahead and finish and sit it on the shelf with my other stuff... It is first rate. I just have too big of a coconut!

So I have started pepping my other ODST helmet again... and will try finishing it off and resinning it....

Finally.... Grim times here in Wisconsin as our govenor (who does NOT have a college degree) tries to rip the guts out of our collective bargaining system....
405th true-believers, I worked DANG hard to get my teaching job and get to where I am in life.... and it is sad seeing my fellow neighbors call me and my collegues
lazy bums.... Disheartening to say the least.... I don't want to start a political debate here on the forums.... Just know that for the moment my mind is on my
job and the future... but my heart is elsewhere trying to get pep work done :p

I'll keep everyone posted on all fronts....

Feet first into grading Mid-terms.... :)

Ok Peeps of the 405....

Finally a slight update on things with my build....

The weather here in Wisconsin is finally starting to thaw and warm... not nearly warm enough for me to go back to the styrospray yet... so I have abandoned that for now....

I got tired of worrying about my job... and if I was going to get layed off... so I decided to occupy my mind and go back and work on my build....

I got the core armor finished and the shoulders... I covered the thin coats of styrospray I had on them all with 2 good coats of plastidip (black).

Next I primed with Rustoleum Auto flat black... then tried Rustoleum Satin green (Oregano).... just looked WAY too green... Master Chief yes... ODST...nope.... So I took Satin Black and misted it good... ghosting it till it got darker and darker... (still has touches of green here and there... mixed in some Dark Gun Metal Grey.....Then went back with the hammered silver and dry brushed the edges to give it that "paint worn off of metal look".... Frosted it a little with the Satin black again to take the shine off the silver.... and here is what I ended up with:

armor_paint02.jpg

Not alot of details on the front as I still have to add all of the plating and such (most is pepped but needs resin)

armor_paint01.jpg

Love how the back turned out.... hard to ssee but on the lower right there is a bunch of silver... I had a lot of hot glue etc there where I had made a repair... I dry brushed it silver... then washed it with some thinned down black and red and oranges... I looks like a rusty exposed bead weld.... if nothing else I got to brush up on dry-drushing....

I also did the shoulder pads as well:

armor_paint03.jpg

All in all it was just fun to get back into my shop and work on it and play in the paint and not deal with a few other things that have been on my mind....

Now seriously... what do you think????

Did I go "overkill" on the dry brushing? What did I goof??? Be honest... I want it to look good :)

Thanks everyone!!!!!

Armors looking good, You're walk thru's are great and give great in sight in how to do strapping And StyroSpray. I'm looking forward to seeing how this comes out. The new foam medium is looking better and better with builds such as you're, of course you could just be making it look easy.

i think builds like this is great... you know.. think out side the box... I believe the detailed armor parts should be pepped and worked on from the there and the main vest/chest piece should be foam because it can also provide mobility and remaining comfortable in it.

looking good man keep it up just luv to see how other peoples odst are going while i work on my own.......

Thank guys for all the positive comments!

ShojiSan92: I am going to attempt the front chect plate in foam.... but if that doesn't work, I am just going to pep it and resin it....

Just got to get started on all those little details....

Cujo3131

Good luck with the chest plate man, i will be very interested to see how you do it. Cant wait to see your progress and great work so far!

Well we have another update.....

I went thru the "weathering" process tonight on my boots....

boot01a.jpg

They say "feet first into hell" ... i tried to scuff and weather them as much as possible...
give them that grunge look... hopefully they will match up well with my other armor....
