Hey all, I know I am kinda new to this posting a thread thing so....be nice...plz. Alright now down to bitness, i need help with figuring out what materials I should use to construct my HVMR-300 prototype railgun, I know what you are probably going to say, figure it out yourself right? Well I aint exactly pro and once in a while(as much it pains me) everyone needs help in stressful situations. Back on topic, I got the idea of creating a new weapon because everyone else made standard Assult Rifles, or BR's, but my insperation came from a challenge from @unsc anubis 117 hunter costume W.I.P. One of the posts said that you better stay out of his way at the comic-con, I got that ODST spunk to challenge his hunter, but in order to do that I need a weapon, something new that aint in the halo games, I need a hand held MAC.

Yes I know it looks like $#!T so bare with me, but this is the prototype for the prototype :unsure , I crunched some numbers and redid the measurements to make it more sniper rifley. I am also going to put in another barrel on the inside of it to give it some idea that this can be used at long range. I know it is missing alot of things like the handle, the trigger guard, the trigger, but then again it is just a prototype. Now what I having delemas about is the fact that i dont know what to make the real one out of, , my first thoughts were ply wood, i have worked with wood before so I know that making it out of ply wood would be easy, but the problem is that I dont have a random work shop in my house so i would have to work on it in school, but I dont want to get expelled for this, it is still an option. My next option came from my shop class teacher, he recomended some sort of light and durable plastic with PBC piping, I have never worked with plastics before so I am hopeing that if i do try and use plastic, I dont want to screw it up last minute. Then lastly he recomended aluminum, i know aluminum is really easy to bend and break but he keep saying use the type made for gutters, I am a bit unsure about that one but I am open to suggestions. If you have an idea, plz dont hesitate to tell me, but keep the ideas uder an $80 dollar budget, thanks for everyones help. :D

Now, this is just my opinion, but that doesn't look bad at all.

You do have some issues with building the final model though, especially if the shop at your school is all you have to go with and you don't want to get booted.

You COULD use some of the info in the Pep building stickies to make this happen for pretty cheap:

Make the weapon out of the cardboard, ensure that all your cuts are precise and delicious, fiberglass, bondo, finish, paint, shoot some hunters.

Personally I would not attempt to make this out of aluminum flashing (the aluminum that gutters are made out of) because...well...flashing usually comes in rolls, and generally you need to have metal shears and gloves in order to cut it safely. Cut flashing gets really sharp and even though you can fold and bend it in just about any manner you wish, it'll put you over the $80 dollar limit pretty quickly and there are some pretty major issues with getting it to hold its shape when you are considering making a weapon out of it on the cheap.

If you want to make it out of wood and use the shop at school, which is probably a bad idea, you'd probably want to do the cuts there and then assemble it at home, just so nobody sees you making a gun at school.

I agree with Alex. This is looking very promising. Do you have any concept sketches or anything to work off of or are you just winging it out of thin air? Making a 3d model out of this wouldn't be that hard. Might think about going that route and peping it. Also I have seen some very sweet looking prop guns made out of card board. Its all about your cuts and the finish. Lol Good luck mate keep us posted.

yea thats what my teacher told me, i wouldnt mind making it out of cardboard, but in my area i cant really seem to find a store that sell the 1/4 inch box that i would need to make it. plus i probably would need a box cutter, i was using a knife lol, it got the general shape though...thanks for you idea about the aluminum but i dont want to go over the limit, i still have to get supplies for the rest of my armor.

this is where i got my references from, after that i was winging it. i tried not to just make an already made weapon and just give it a new name. i atleast tried to tweek it abit so it is more like a sniper rifle, im trying to be alittle original.

Nice, I will be watching this. If you would make it fire I would give you a cookie. (It isn't actually that difficult)

Got ideas on how to make it fire? :unsure

Well, I don't know that much about railguns, but i do know that they operate by using electrical charges to change the polarization (correct word?) of magnets that line the barrel at very (literally microseconds) small intervals of time. Instructables has several projects about rail and coil guns, so you might want to check that out.

im not going to make it fire, as awsome it would be i can garrente(i really cant seem to spell that word) that if i fly to the mainland, security is going to take it, they may think im going to kill someone with it.

Hmmmmm... I'm guessing that your best option is still going to be the cardboard. Just be sure to resin it really well b4 you bondo it. Otherwise, you'll have a lot of trouble sanding it down. Like the other posters said, aluminum flashing will become sharp and expensive quite quickly. I'd recommend first making a "draft"/blueprint of the rifle will work the best. (If you're still looking at cardboard.) Railguns are too difficult to effectively build within that, and making a coil gun is expensive, dangerous, requiring a firm mastery of electronics, and slightly impractical. (Did I mention dangerous?) I actually would recommend putting a nerf gun in that sucker, for it looks big enought to fit most models.

Hope that helped (in some way or another.)

Cheers!

OMG A HANDHELD MAC SOUNDS LIKE TOTAL AWESOMENEZZ. Well if your familiar with the MAC in the halo books they use a giant depleted uranium round that is accelerated with magnetic coils. I'd say if you wanted to make a scaled down handheld one the rounds should be about the size of a soda can or maybe a little shorter? If you want your gun to fire I'd say a spring mechanism is the way to go. For loading I'd just make it a single shot gun so you could wear an ammo belt across your chest or something which would look pretty cool if you were to have full ODST or Mjolnir armor on.

i dont think i would be able to get a spring that would be good enough to launch a soda can size round, i may just leave it not able to fire anything. if i cant find a way to make it fire, something that wount let airport security a reason to confenscate it.

Well I wouldn't use, a small Coleman stove propane tank, an electric grill ignition switch, some PVC and a drain valve... That could be dangerous!!! I just wouldn't do it... Something this powerful could theoretically launch a potato a few hundred yards, threw a window or maybe a door... But I wouldn't know that... 'cause it is illegal here in Florida... AND EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.... :rolleyes

You made me research if there was actually a Hand-held MAC rifle in the HALO Universe...

So I went to HALOPEDIA.com and also checked in the HALO Encyclepedia Book that i have(yeah I know Im a big HALO fan sorry) and it turns out that there a sniper rifle made from the same tech. as the MAC Cannons.

Heres the LINK

Its call the M99 Special Application Scoped rifle or referred to as the M99 Stanchion Guass Rifle

It's pretty damn crazy, I read that it could go through about 10 inches of titanium armor

(I wanna see if that could knockout a HUNTER)
