Just to clarify, this is NOT a what should I build thread! I'm trying to get some legitimate artistic opinion here. Here are my questions:

I personally feel that the black on my helmet is, well, too black. You can't see the black detail that would be universal for all helmets. Would it add to my helmet if I repainted it a very dark grey? pics of my helmet here -> http://www.405th.com/showthread.php/31791-Finished-MK-VI-amp-Magnum (the first three pics don't count, only the one with the viking helmet shows my helmet after the clear-coat)

Secondly! I'm tempted to make an ODST helmet, but I don't want to build two sets of armor. Is it noticeable/forgivable to put an ODST helmet on Spartan armor and say you're an ODST?

Thanks for your time all!
Cheers!

Honestly I've found that the only people to notice if you are an ODST or not are fellow fans.

I wore a complete ODST suit around and most just said "hey look it's Master Chief!"

That's why I'm asking fellow fans :p Is it considered a sin to put an ODST helmet on Spartan armor and say you're an ODST?

Why not put an ODST helmet on Spartan armor and say you're a Spartan? That way, you can just say that you're replicating a Multiplayer armor type.

See? This is still a Spartan, not an ODST:

Well I actually appreciate the ODST background and stuff, I have an affection for ninjas, special tactics, stuff of that nature. So correct if I'm wrong, but ODST's are Ninja paratroopers from hell! :p I love it!

It is a mortal sin! A spartan shalt not impersonateth an ODST...eth.
Just kidding. Its your armor, my friend. Do what makes YOU happy. The ODST helmet with Mjonlir armor is a legitimate combination in both multiplayer Halo and in the reach campaign via the armory. Now putting a MkVI helmet on ODST armor.....that would be a little wierd.

Well, from a Halo fan's perspective, I wouldn't consider you an ODST if you only had the helmet, but with Spartan armor.

And forgive me for my ignorance, but I don't really understand why you would have Spartan armor, not ODST armor if you're such a fan of ODSTs.

Anyway, I personally don't consider ODSTs as stealthy or ninja-like, regardless of the fact that we have suppressed weapons in Halo 3: ODST. I mean, they come crashing in out of the sky in giant capsules. To me, they're just shock troops (hence their name) that have better equipment and training than regular Marines/soldiers, and are the first on the ground in an engagement. Essentially bridging the gap between Marines and Spartans.

Have you checked Pony (ACDCrockr209)'s ODST paint scheme? Kinda reminds me of the WETA ODST version.

Look at my avatar. ;) In terms of what is canon, a Spartan may wear an ODST helmet but he is still a Spartan. An ODST's body is not prepped to handle a Mark VI armor so it's a non-starter. But as alecgates15 already explained, a hardcore Halo fan might object but others might just give you a thumbs-up. Either way, don't tell them you're ODST and you'll be fine.

I like ODST's... I just like Spartan's even more :p The Mark VI Armor is my favorite since Halo 3 is the only Halo game I got the opportunity to play the whole way through (see avatar) so I'm kinda biased in that regard :p

This still leaves my previous question though: Is the black too black?

Thats the problem with black armor. I made my first suit like that and the only way to detail it is with silver dry brush. Looks good but its a little plain. I would go with a dark gray. That way you can do black detail and and other damage like burn marks and chips without them fading into the black.

You could also try doing the "dirt" in a more brownish colour, like mud or sand, or simply in grey (on dark clothes, you always see the white dust, remember? :)). But I have no idea how that is going to look, I don't think I've ever seen it done like that :)
You can also try making damage like burn marks black only in the center (maybe even with a little orange... molten, glowing armour!) and use grey, white and brown in the area around the actual impact.
I would also stay far away from glossy paint, the most I would use is semi-gloss. But that's my personal preference.

I did my best to avoid glossy paint, but the clear coat/sealer made it shinier :/ Maybe I should buff it with high grit sandpaper :$

Krylon makes a dull clear coat, I used it on my Master Chief bucket. Also you could break up the black by using a different black like satin black or flat black for some high lights and shadows. That along with some silver dry brushing could do the the trick.

Why not do a blue or silver visor? That would look epic. Plus you could switch between ODST and a Spartan. :D

For color, why not steel? Its pretty dark, but not totally dark that you lose detail.

To be honest, I am doing my ODST armor in all black. I was going to do a dark grey for detail and use LEDs for accents (or maybe EL strips). To me black isn't bad, it's just how you accent it.

A dull clear coat huh? :$ This warrants investigation... Thank you VERY much.

And as for the visor, I actually saw some blue one's at my local hardware store.
