Music Tastes

@RedTogusa:I'm surprised you think Slipknot is "really heavy stuff". I went through another very short period of liking that band when I was in my teens (13-14) but it soon wore off, it wasn't heavy enough for me and the lyrics were a bit too shallow for my taste.
I seem to share one trait with you - listening to one song/album over and over again until every word is stuck in my head. But you're right, the downside of that is that it gets boring too soon and I end up forgetting that particular song/album for a while.

Haha, I'm glad I'm not the only person on here that suffers from that problem.
Yeah Slipknot was a weak example I guess. It isn't incredibly heavy, well depending on what you listen to I guess. It also seems to be more aimed at teeny grungeies aswell. That being said Subliminal Verses was very good. I actually prefer Corey Taylors other band Stone Sour.
Do bands such as Norma Jean, Kitty, and Still Remains sound any better?
I also strictly try to avoid Emo music but my guilty pleasure has to be screamo band 'From Autumn to Ashes'.
And I totally agree, I love both the Matrix movie (yes. All 3. I convince myself the 2nd and 3rd are awesome) and The Matrix soundtrack, so many good tracks on there.
And yes the Halo theme and albums are iconic. Breaking Benjamins Blow me Away was pretty good to boot. ;)

I kinda think slipknot is heavy xD but erm thats just my opinion.

I started listening to music at the age of 11. My first music i really liked was Greenday (punk/rock)
And i kinda sticked with it. I listen to Alternative rock, rock, hardrock, punk. But nothing extremer then that. Dont really like when they scream in music.

I've heard Kitty years and years ago! Boy, I completely forgot about that band. They were alright. I guess I think this of them because it was a refreshing surprise to see an all-girl metal band. But beyond that...I didn't think too much of them. They were sort of heavy, in a way different to Slipknot, but shared the same flaws such as lyrics and tendency to repeat themselves...again, this is just my personal opinion.

I also avoid emo music at all cost. Emo fashion as well. I'm insulted by them in a weird way, they're stealing the spotlight of us goths  Since emo spread around, I haven't seen a single one of those old school goths I was a part of myself. I think we all withdrew to our holes to wait the emo infestation out.

As for Breaking Benjamin...definitely not my type of music, but I have to admit that Blow Me Away is my guilty pleasure, haha. However, only because of Halo.

look at my profile pictures. I have gotten into death metal and black metal (from Norway of course), but my all time favorite is definitely Mastodon. I can't go one day without listening to one song by them, it starts my day.

I have gotten into grindcore now, thanks Kelly!

I didn't really have any of my own music tastes until I was 10 or 11 (though I loved my Dad's Three Dog Night tape. Joy to the World (Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog) was awesome, and the rampant innuendo was completely lost on me. I started to like the Beatles, classical music, and select contemporary music. That kinda sucked. Then I realized that it was really dumb to hate a genre, and I opened up to other stuff.

I loved Nickelback for a while (and I still like them.) I started to expand my tastes, mostly to more alt rock bands.

I discovered about a year ago that rap/hip-hop doesn't suck, pop can be really good, and the vocals can really make or break a song. I'd say they're always the most important part, but that stands refuted by Van Halen: the vocals are fine, but Eddie's name is on the label for a reason.

I recently rediscover classic rock (OK, discovered: I'm only 16. I'd sort of liked it in the past, but never really appreciated how good it was.)

I like Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, 5 For Fighting, Maroon 5, Evanescence, Judas Priest, Van Halen, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance, Basshunter, Fall out Boy, The Fray, Breaking Benjamin, The Killers, Fort Minor, Creed, Relient K... too many to list, really. I like any genre, although you'll notice I do have a bias towards male artists.

My music tastes have been called "eclectic," and I tend to agree. I go for anything well-written and well-composed. Any genre can fall under those criteria.

im glad someone said From Autumn to Ashes, their one of my faves.

Anyways, I started actually caring about what i listened to in 7th grade. I had mostly listened to what everyone at prep school listened to, you know, Chris Brown, Green Day, Fall Out Boy and the likes, but i always felt empty with that music, cause as soon as the new single by 'whoever' was out, everyone forgot about the previous 'fresh' song and moved onto the next one. My first song/band that i started listening to on my iPod was a song i heard on Need for Speed Most Wanted. This song opened me up into a whole different world of music. A slightly edited version of Hand of Blood by Bullet for My Valentine changed my perception of music forever and is now still my favorite band. After i bought their albums, I could'nt stop exploring the new genres of metalcore, post hardcore, and most recently Screamo. I slowly began to drift away musically from what my friends listened to and what sounded more meaningful to me. One of my friends from Korea gave me some burned CD's of bands he liked and i then found one of my favorite bands, Silverstein, is his massive collection of post hardcore, emo, and ska rock songs. Since i go to preppie school, not many people "like" my styles of music. The majority of people at my school 'love' whats hot right now on the radio; rap, hip hop, pop, etc. I personally hate those types of music, as i used to like it, but i found nothing rewarding or satisfactory in it. My styles of music have significantly changed since I used to be in middle school. Now my favorite bands are usually subdivided into metalcore and post-hardcore/punk styles. my favorite bands in the latter are Silverstein, Senses Fail, Saosin, Escape the Fate, From Autumn to Ashes, Saosin, The Vandals, The Used, Drop Dead, Gorgeous, A Skylit Drive, Blessthefall... For metalcore, Bullet for My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold, Atreyu, As I Lay Dying, The Showdown, Underoath... Well, that about sums up my musical escapades, so, voila! :p

The Killers, yes, I came by them a year ago and found myself liking their stuff pretty much. Editors as well, the vocalist of the Editors has an amazing voice. Reminds me of Nick Cave in a way.

And Saosin is very good, I remember hearing their music a while back and liking it. Never got around to actually getting something of theirs, though.

RadioactiveMicrobe, have you always been into indie music or have you gotten into it after being into some other sort of music? Which bands are your favourites?
Well, my first music taste when I was about 5 was NSYNC. After that I tried some pop music, wasn't a fan of it. Then I tried metal, and I was getting closer. But about 3 years ago I heard Wolf Parade on a movie, And I quote "What is this wonderful music?" So I wait until the credits and I find the title, and it all kind of fell into place from there.

Some bands I am into; Wolf Parade, Beirut, Modest Mouse, Ugly Casanova, Jaguar Love, one screamo band named Blood Brothers, Of Montreal, Death From above 1979, one ska band named Streetlight Manifesto, Some Daft Punk, Tilly and the Wall, The Hush Sound, Death Cab
For Cutie, The Postal Service. Only to name a few.

I was listening to Alice in Chains/Radiohead/The Police/Rage Against the Machine/Tool when I was in the womb.

I've been hooked ever since.

I hate Linkin Park. Their music makes me mad.... Not the good "music high" mad, the "severe disappointment in the human race for letting these whiny, one formula douches get rich" mad. Same thing with My Chemical Romance, except more people agree with me...

If you like Ska, you should really check out Reel Big Fish.
I've been told that a lot. But so far, only Streetlight has clicked with me. Less Than Jake and Catch 22 didn't impress me. I'll try me some Reel Big Fish.

I started listening to punk rock with a small band we had here called : Vulgar Machins. Then I moved one to more Hard Rock/Metal, pretty much in for Disturbed now :D

I listen to a bit of everything I think, minus rap.... But if I had to choose a favorite genre to classify myself its Black and Death Metal

My favorite Band in the world is Opeth. followed by all my "second favs" like Iniquity, Old Man's Child, Behemoth, Dimmu Borgir, Chthonic (or however you spell it), Borknagar, Naglfar, blahblahblah.....

hopefully, you get the point. But I also have a heart for (good) Rock music and other sorts of stuff.... eh, i'll put up with something for long enough if it actually contains a hint of skill in the instrumentals ^^

EDIT: If you want a really good high, listen to an Opeth song and I swear you will be in full nirvana. Mikael Akerfeldt is my drug <3

Wow, you're the first person other than myself who listened to Naglfar! :D Most people never heard of that band. And Opeth...I have been liking that band for, oh...some 10 years now :p They are the absolute perfection of progressive death. Mikael is a very funny guy when performing live.

i always liked music, but i never really started liking a certain genre until guitar hero 2 came out
now im a pure metal head, in fact i always did like Iron Maiden

but im into all kinds of rock/metal/punk/etc, i seriously hate rap and country, they both make me want to take a gun to my head

some of my top bands are Avenged Sevenfold (A7X), Disturbed, Drowning Pool, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, Rise Against (not Rage Against), and Killswitch Engage

Mikael is a riot, I look forward to hear what he has to say in between songs (live) because he always says somethign funny as hell lol. I've made it my duty to see Opeth/Mikael everytime they end up in South Florida. The last time I saw Opeth was Oct. 20 and I skipped college and ran up to the mainland and was the first person to go in since i waited at the entrance for ...hmm...about 5 hours was it? yeah.....it's fanfreakintastic!

oh and Naglfar has never been heard of as far as I know, your the first to admit hearing them lol... most people think i'm just makin up a sillty name when i mention Naglfar or Borknagar lol

I got one Naglfar album from my ex's brother, back when we were together and he convinced me I'd like it. And I did! I remember as if it was yesterday. He gave me one Naglfar and one Belphegor album. Since then I got a couple more. Not listening to them all that much anymore, in fact, it's been a couple of years since I last put them on, but yeah, I do like their stuff (still!).

I personally listen to Blues, Hard Rock, and all kinds of Metal
i think it's funny how those 3 genres sound so alike by using the same chords/scale progression, yet so different
kind of an amusing thought for any musician who keeps their mind open and then listens to them
like AC/DC=Heavy Blues with distortion+1 crazy old dude dancing around while playing guitar
