ODST Helmet Pre-Painting Prep

I just got my first piece of halo armor being my ODST helmet. Its 3D printed and has already been sanded smooth.

What preparations do I need to make to start painting? Then below is what I plan to do with the helmet:

  1. Canon paint job
  2. Black inner liner
  3. Either Foam or motorcycle padding to make it feel real.
  4. Adding a flashlight to the side where the bracket is and maybe trying to attach a fake battery pack on the rear outer side.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Helljumper!

Theres a lot of different painting techniques that you can use, just depends on if you want it looking brand new or have battle damage and so on. You can use rattle can (spray paint) for it all or you can airbrush or you can even use a brush on type of paint.

You will need masking materials so you can hit areas with certain colors as well as a top coat for whatever type of painting you wish to go with to either give it a glossy sheen or just a nice flat look.

I would strongly suggest painting it fully before adding in visor or any of the innards fully just in case the paint gets on anything on the inside.

Amazon has some great helmet padding kits that will help pad your bucket easily and allow space for wiring and such as needed.

Happy Building!

I first used some ACH pads from an old combat helmet I had. You can get the same type of pads HERE (Amazon pads)

I’ve personally found that cushion foam (I bought the green stuff you can easily find at Walmart) is firm but squishy enough to give you a very comfortable, snug fit. I recommend you try both out and see what you prefer. Most people are shocked how much more comfortable and snug cushion foam is (it’s almost memory foam-like)

As far as painting goes— I’d say start with a very firm concept of what you want to do. If it involves more than one color, the ONE thing I want you to know is that you should not mix brands. That’s a one way ticket to getting some ugly cracking and orange peel. Give yourself a couple days between colors as well.

The forums are full of advice and YouTube has tons of tutorials! Grab some blue masking tape, pick your colors, and do a little research before you paint!
