If you are having trouble smoothing out oil based clay try using a very very soft artists paint brush and paint thinners/mineral spirits.

Lightly brush the thinners over the clay this softens up the clay enabling you to smooth it out.Use delicate brush strokes.

You can also use Avons hand cream this also softens up the clay...it will also smell nice as well lol.

This technique is used to get the clay really smooth. Think as it as giving your piece a final sanding before spraying. It also helps to fill in any tiny holes or dents as well.

I normally add a little to a brush and then basically just brush the clay into place as and where needed.Then go over it again with my feathering and smoothing tools



After about 5-10 mins the clay will harden again.

I only had about 5 oz of smoothcast 320 left so yes it had a little reinforcing I wish it had more but it's somewhat working. If you ever get back down to Utah county feel free to swing by

I would for sure add a lot more than that, thats all the plastic I had, its still very fragil but enough to add clay

If the oil based clay never really hardens, whats the next step after the clay in order to get it hard enough to work with / cast?

Although oil based clay never really hardens it does maintain a certain rigidity after its not been handled basically the heat generated from your hands is enough to make it workable to a degree.

I like to store my sculpts in a cool room before covering it in silicone.

They were completely scratch build with cardboard then I just threw on the bondo and sanded it.

cant I already turned of my computer and since I didnt have the password to save the file I would have to start from scatch but even if I did I dont have internet at home to sent it to you, only internet i have is my iphone and work computers that dont alow any downloading. fyi though, its very similar to camillos file but with more parts and the whole isnt cut out, you can still get the same effect with that model all you have to do is cut the peices out and put them on cardboard and glue it to together like I did.

ok I had made a smaller version of the pep that I am now going to give to my wife and do somthing similair to how nightmare armor did there female armor as far as lay out here's the pep

I bought some clay and I'm waiting on purchuseing some plastic to harden up the card board a little before I start also in the meantime I've almost completed pepping the new lone wolf helm that rundown put out.

thanks brutus, the helmet is good but there have been things that Ive been noticing that bother me and I wanted to try it again. and I want to start learning how to make stuff using clay instead of bondo since all I can do it pep work during the scary winters until I can get a shop plus bondo takes so much more time
