Ok, after having my ODST and hayabusa armour on hold for a while because of school, I decided to start up a new project that would test my abilities with scratch building. Seeing how there are no files for the WETA marine armour, I decided to try my hand at making a WETA accurate marine costume.

I have CADPAT issue BDU's that I will be using, A WETA styled Battle rifle in the works, and I have Vrogy's marine pep files. I will be using pep for the helmet, and the greaves disincluding the knee plates. I will be scratch building from cardboard, resin, fiberglass, and bondo the entire body, the knees, the elbows, the shoulder pads, and the shin guards.

I will be moding the greaves to be more WETA like, but the helmet will be Halo 3 styled with a few WETA things added. Things like the mouth speaker piece, the goggels (also in Halo 3), and I will also add little custome things to the helmet to make it more like modern day helmets. Scrim netting, goggels, night vision goggels, helmet covers. Anything to make it cooler. If I can, I may be abled to get my hands onto some New Zealand issue DPM BDU's, but if not I will stick with the CADPAT's or some British DPM's.

Ok, many of you have seen my WETA BR, but here is a up to date picture of it.

I also have the Halo 3 mairne helmet finished.

Tell me what you think. I will update ASAP.

The BR looks nice... did you use the slice method (and some custom work, I'm sure) to make it? Helmet looks good... I'd like to see some more views of it.

Its pep. Just line up the numbers, cut straight, make clean folds and you'll have a great pep helmet.

Thanks for the comments! Im starting on scratch building the body right now.

OK, well, I guess I never got to the back part "tonight", but I have started a new WETA Marine Chest piece.

I based the new chest plate off this picture because the old picture was junk and low-def.

Now, over the weekend I did a few modifications to the WETA Battle Rifle. Lets see if you can spot them between these 2 pictures:

First one to get them all gets a cookie!

Since I was rained our this weekend, I will be coating my Battle rifle with resin next weekend if the weather cooperates with me.

I will update with the neck guard and/or back piece soon.

Ok, I have the neck guard finished! Once its covered in some OD material it will look like the WETA version. Right now its just the basic shape.

Its only thick because I decided it would be a waist of fiberglass and resin to fiberglass the armour parts (all but the helmet). Also, its thick because its thicker than you imagen. If this was real life, it would have to withstand bullets, so if you think about it, it would have to be thick. Also it holds the shape of the armour, and if you look at the WETA pictures, the armour is thick.

Anyhow, UPDATE!

I finaly got the back piece finished.

Hey everybody,

As you can see, this project is back in full swing, and I have some progress to show for it.

After developing a new method for my Cardboard Weta version Battle Rifle, I decided to put it to the test with my scratch built Weta marine armour. The only problem is I threw away my old Weta marine armour parts, so I had to start anew.

So far I have finished making the Weta marine chest plate from cardboard, and I have moved onto the next step of the scratch building process.

Basically, with my new method of scratch building, I first drew a small scaled schematic of the chest plate.

I then scaled it to full size so it would fit my body perfectly.

Afterwards, I began to build the chest plate from cardboard.

DSCN1752.jpg

Now, this is where the new method begins to kick in. I then took cereal box board, and glued it on all of the faces of the chest plate I wanted closed with more crisp detail.

DSCN1759.jpg

I then added in the under-arm parts using the same basic method.

Now, this is where my real experiment has began.

I was brainstorming ways to reinforce the cardboard, and after exhausting a lot of possibilities, I saw that there was only 1 real option. So, I mixed some rondo (20% Resin, 80% Bondo) and brushed a thin coat on. Its not sanded, but it has just finished drying, and boy, its STRONG!

After deliberately throwing it from the second story balcony of our house onto a cement sidewalk three times, there was not a scratch, dent, chip or crack in the rondo. I believe I have finally figured everything I need to do out.

Now, after talking to Weta Workshop a while ago, and having them tell me about practically everything regarding their ODST and Marine costumes, I decided to put some of their information into practice. I decided to make the neck piece from EVA foam.

So far it has turned out okay. It will look better when I have the faded olive drab fabric sewn in place around the neck piece.

I have also made some more headway on my Weta version Battle Rifle.

The newly installed heat shield that I am VERY proud of.

And, finally, I have picked up some nice new CADPAT BDU’s for my marine costume.

Expect an update sometime tomorrow night with the chest plate primed and ready for paint, and the neck piece nearly complete.

Tell me what you think!

wow, you are posting faster than it took me to find this topic! i am AMAZED at what you could do with cardboard, and i love the battle rifle, it looks awsome as it is, but i can see little room for improvment in complete perfect accuracy, but that is not expected. but, that is all AWSOME!
