Hi, I take a martial arts class in bloominton here, so what do you take? I am in the kids class :rolleyes but it is equivalent to 2 belts lower in small circle juijitsu, modern arnis (cane stuff), and ishinru karate (my next form uses nunchucks). So what do people other than me do? Include boxing and/or wrestling.

I took Traditional Okinawan Karate, specifically Goju-ryu until about 1-2 years ago when I moved here. I'd only been in it for a little over a year, but I loved it. I'm a blue belt (6th Kyu).

I play a little capoeira, only been doing it about a year.

Did a year or two of Kung Fu - Wah Lum Tam Tui - Northern Praying Mantis. Miss it, might go back if I get back in shape again, so much stretching involved.

Cheers,
Kensai

I took karate as a kid...

But I'm trying to fit jujitsu into my schedule, too bad I work the days the classes are

And Krav Maga is one I was told to do, but the only class for that is in hour away in Chicago.

But those are the ones I SHOULD be doing.

is capawera really a form of martial arts or dancing? dont think you could emply the moves in offense or defense.

anyway, i was a green belt, black stripe in Okinawan Go juru (sp*). same style as in karate kid.

havnt done it since about 2001....

i also taught sword fighting, generally for stage combat, which traslated into lightsaber classes given inn sandiego for a bit back in the early 2000's to the local star wars group.

Capoeira is a form of martial arts with dance like rythems. I was created by prisoners/workers who were told any kind of martial arts was outlawed, so to conceal their form they made it look like dancing. dont quote me but I believe thats how it came to be.

In Okinawa weapons (swords) were outlawed so other devices were used, nunchucks were grain thrashers and sais were yoke pins, etc. Personally the modern martial arts like scj are better because there is only one goal with no constrictions, fighting prowess(control of your opponent) and you can always ask why you do a certain move and be given a straight explanation. As our founder Wally Jay said "Pain makes Believers".

Made it to junior black belt in Tae Kwon Do back when I was like 10 or 11. Took about 9 months of Universal (Kempo). Took Kendo until my schedule restricted me. And I took Yagyu Shin Kage Ryu (Kenjitsu from the 1600s-Present combined with Live Blade & Iaido training) for about 2 months until I couldn't spare any cash or time.

Art school is a full time job, 18-20 hours a day when it's in session.

And addressing Capoeira, watch the recent Aeon Flux movie (the one with Charlize Theron). She had to learn Capoeira for the fight scenes in that movie.

I do kaio-ken.

Lol jk. I actually don't do any formal martial arts (which is weird since I'm asian), but I can hold my own in a fistfight if need be. Lol

Or watch Tony jaa's movie "The Protector" (if your into martial arts movies) he fights a guy that uses capoeira and learns his rythems and really messes the guy up BADLY! Aeon flux was a disaster IMO. I have a few friends that were into the comix/graphic novels and they pretty much said it was ruined.

heres a link to a youtube clip of the fight-

Capoeira fight

I took Aikido for a couple of years (blue Belt) But a long hospital stay and evenlonger recovery from surgery pretty much ended that. I concentrated on the weapons excercise when I could, something about fighting with a Katana and a staff that rocks.

Yes, capoeira is a martial art. People have gotten killed in Rodas on the streets of Brazil.

The "Protector," which I greatly enjoyed and think is an awesome movie, is still a Tony Jaa, where Tony Jaa plays the hero. Of course he wins, plus, it was a staged fight, not really fair to use a staged fight sequence as a basis for how effective a fighting style is.

Just because something looks fancy, doesn't mean it can't be practical. Though I don't particularly like showy moves, i have a friend who took Capoeira and he can kick some major but. Its ment to be decieving, just like Katas or forms. Katas were invented when martial arts were outlawed in okinawa. It looked like dancing. You would learn a kata and repeat it until it was perfect then you would learn the next one. And its Goju-ryu *points at above post* thats what I used to take. you said green belt with a black stripe, do you know what kyu rank you were? All dojos use different colors so just saying what color isn't always a good indicator.

For example, heres the ranking at my old dojo:

10th Kyu White Belt
9th Kyu Yellow Belt
8th Kyu 'Gold' Belt (Eventually became yellow w/ black stripe, due to confusion)
7th Kyu Orange Belt
6th Kyu Blue Belt
5th Kyu Purple Belt
4th Kyu Green Belt
3rd Kyu Red Belt
2nd Kyu Brown Belt
1st Kyu Brown w/ Black Stripe
Shodan Black Belt - 1st Degree

Also anyone interested in history and such can PM me I have some papers in my notebook still. My class was required to learn history among other things, along with karate.

For those of you who don't know what Capoeira looks like you can watch Lateef Crowder's demo reel here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZjXTSvmfeQ

Or, you can look him or Zero Gravity up. Lateef uses a lot of Capoeira.

Green
Green / black
Brown
Brown/black
Black
1st

3rd...etc to i think 10th? i dont really recall, my shodan and sensei were 4th and 6th respectively. the lead guy had an Axe kick that you could never dodge...really scary.

Ouch....that used to be my favorite kick until I tore a ligament doing it. Yes, it goes to 10th. Master English studied over in Okinawa. She's kind of old now, so she taught my friends for a while and me when I first started, but she's turned it over to two of her black belts (both 5th Degree). She has a grankid in the class, now.

Well most of the time you go to a martial arts stage show, its mostly coreographed fights and only a few bitd of actual fighting. I mentioned The Protector cause it shows some of the basic movements and attacks used in Capoeira, so people get the basic idea. Or you can play Tekken, choose Eddie gordo, His fighting style is capoeira lol.
