cant wait to see it finish...

Sorry, didn't realize New Years was that close.....

UPDATE:

Pep work is all done and scaled correctly. The helm will have to be cut into 2-3 pieces in post production to get a human head into it. Here is how I plan on putting it info effect.

Ok now to resin this thing up....Too bad the weather here is a cool just above freezing, so this might take a hot minute to get hardened up.

Quick note on the pep file:

There are many locations where the fold and the flap fall on top of each other. As the angles of this helmet can be extreme, this minor glitch became quite bothersome and required me to re-edit the unfold so I could get the folds and seams to marry up properly. This still didn't prevent other normal pep'ing issues from cropping up. I'm sure some of you will have no issue, but I just wanted to share my lesson learned. Statyk did a great job with this model!!! Thanks alot bud!

So the problem with the helmet is that the hole at the bottom is not wide/long enough? I'd really like to fix this so others don't have to split this helmet in half =\ It's really a matter of grabbing one side and pulling it with a soft modifier. I just need to know what's wrong with it D: and I don't really understand the extra flap thing you're talking about. Do you have a photo example? perhaps a screenshot of the pep on computer.

Hope you can help me out.. I'd like to fix this before more and more people download.

I think you're bad ass for being to open to suggestions. I want to preface my comments with, I in no way can do what you do nor will I ever say anything hurtful about the 3D modeler community here at the 405th.

So will all due respect and humility here are my very retentive comments that might help further revisions of this helm:

eyeedit_zpsee05b004.jpg

For what ever reason there are ALL flaps along these seams. Easily cut off and corrected, but a weird little thing that I came across.

underedit_zps9c5a8f61.jpg

Along this seam is the majority of the reason a person can't just slide this helmet on. From the chin to the nape of the neck is "ok" length wise, but the width is where I think most people will have issues.

The section of paneling behind the 2 jaw intakes look like they could be more laterally rounded out, which would save/fix the issue of sliding it on without having multiple pieces.

I hope this helps. Also, I would re-edit the unfold so all the areas where a fold and seam are virtually in the same spot no longer are close or connected. It means there might be more pieces to cut out, but at least all the seams would marry up and not have to be glued on the "edge" of the paper but on the flap. People can obviously fix this themselves, which I didn't do until I had already almost finished the helmet 2x, but if you want to have a perfectly polished model and unfold, these are my critiques.

Again, please don't take anything I said personally. I am very impressed you are interested in going back into it a 2nd time and tweaking things. I definatly have little to no idea of what kind of magic you guys do to make these pep files possible. *salute*

Hmm? Why would I take offense to something that not only did I have wrong, but am asking for help with =P I would like them as much as possible so it can be correct the first time. I'll go back and widen the helmet a bit and perhaps give the intake a bit more of a rounding. How much more would you say it should be spread open in width? also, the visor part confuses me a bit. Are you saying there shouldn't be any flaps to connect the visor pieces to the helmet itself?

Thanks for the heads up! Don't feel bad at all for giving me these suggestions. I take none of it personally. I MAY have to unfold it some more again by tweaking the model though... ergh.

Good luck to ya though!

EDIT: I see what you mean by the flaps now... What is THAT all about??? D:

I would increase the width by 2 inches total. That "should" do the trick.

I can't tell if I'm coming across like a detail oriented pr%^k or not sometimes, so I would rather err on the side of caution. Besides, the 3D modelers here get hounded and beat up by people regularly. I never want to do that.

Thanks.

Well if they can't take the heat, they should get out of the kitchen, you know? ;]

Thanks, I'll try fixing it up.

So yeah this is the hardest pep I've done so far. Crazy angles. I'm not going to post an update till I have a day where the temp outside is above 40degF. I might be able to use a room to resin, but I need to convince the Wife on that idea.

I promise to update ASAP.

Enjoy the New Year guys!

you can always get you some plastic from smooth-on to harden it as well. makes it easier during the winter time

I agree ^ . Buy a trial size of Smooth-cast 300 or 320 , seal up the seems on the helmet with painters tape , and then pour in several batches of plastic into the helmet like you would into a mold. You can slush cast it around and once you get a good coating , it will be the same strength as resin and fiberglass without the weight. I recommend putting a thin coat of fiberglass resin on the outside helmet (just to seal up any holes. After that the painters tape should do it) . You just may have to use a little extra catalyst so it does cure with the weather being cold. The paper should soak up the plastic very well and is super easy to sand (and you can do it inside your house , just make sure you cover your workspace with newspaper and use gloves!) I hope that helps man! The model looks SUPER complicated and your pep looks nice and clean! Keep it up!

Guys,

Tyvm for all the positive comments. Ty also for the tips on reinforcing. I got some smooth cast and will work on it tomorrow. I tested some resin today to see how long it would take to cure.....not a good result. After 7hrs it was still tacky. So what do you guys think of this idea:

After smooth on slush cast I use the clay from my failed oceanic helm sculpt to simulate bondo and sanding on the outside then make the mold from there.

Again, Ty all very much for all the support. This helm is totally a community effort.

Pics to follow tomorrow/later today.

Update!!

So I had a day here where the sun was out and it was a nice 40degF outside. Still not warm enough for resin/bondo, but with a heat gun it made a difference. I just made sure not to "bake" the piece. Just enough to get the temp around it to 70+deg.
