Ok, so I'm kinda a stickler against black. There's nothing tactical about black. So my ODST I have painted Olive Drab, and am gonna wrap it up over some old school fatigues. Thing is, I can't seem to get the stupid suit up and running without use of black fabric is certain areas. (Under the shoulder pieces, strapping for the stomach pieces, etc...) I just can't find O.D. fabric anywhere. So, pro's, whatcha think? Should I continue with my blissful Olive-Drab endeavors, or reverse gears and go black?

I would go grey, because you are right, pure shiny black is somewhat untactical ;-)
You could also apply a grey digital camouflage with a tint of green, that would be black-strap-compatible, tactical and totally cool at the same time.

I can also help you with the fabric: These belts can be taken apart in like 10 seconds, so that the textile part can be used otherwise.

hmmmm. thanks, guys. I'll see what I can do. Blasted economy. Need a stinkin' paycheck, too...

ODSTs are really not black, but I have seen some gloss black ODSTs and I made myself go out and find some grays. The undersuit is still black, but the armor itself is a dark gray. Looking an reference Pics always helps!

I believe I have seen some green ODSTs before....

I think I've also seen some green ODST's and that's kinda what I'm goin for. This way I can also take the armor out airsofting and blend with the ambience around me. It works excellent with regular fatigues and camo-mesh; I've had the enemy walk within 10 feet of me and never notice. I'm kinda going for the same effect, but obviously, gonna hafta change tactics a little bit, but should still work. I'll try to get some pics up for oppinions just as soon as I get some straps on the thing and see what all y'all's think.

I think that if you want to go for a more tacticle olive approach, by all means do it. Its your armour and you could make it glow in the dark if you really wanted to (and had the means).
I was planning to make a MkVI suit with odst permutation, but i was going to have all sorts of amo pouches and backpacks and stuff straped on. Thats not technically game accurate but who really cares.
Personally i think that the olive camo idea is awsome. I Played capture the flag the other night out in the bush. I just had a green shirt and grey/olive pants on and that was still enough camo for me to sneak around behind the other team and crawl up to within 20 meters of the flag. Guess they wont very observant...

I'm pretty sure that the ODST armor still has black trimming in some areas. Though overall the armor is typically a dark gray or olive drab.

Training with HEAT and SRT, we used the standard woodland, digi desert and digi urban. Woodland worked allright for our environ (steppe and lava feilds) but both digi Urban and Desert had great effect. Don't know how much this helps you, but the darker stuff worked for us.

What would you say about matt black?

trying to avoid black, personally. Everyone else has black, and I wanna be different. I'll see what happens, I guess. If I don't like it, I could always build another one...

or simply re-paint...

Navy blue might be an alternative to Black, though adding black to a dark uniform is never a bad thing. I understand the want to stand out a little, it's just you're deviating from the game, and too much of a deviation might some off as too strange, compared to the black and grey ODST we see in game.

Meh, it's your build. Do what you want, I'd just recommend dark shades of colors. (also think about team colors and stripes as a bit of a contrast to the black/dark colors. IE: the white stripe on Rookie)

Paint it pink then, LOL

I think the darker tones work for the ODST's, like the black and dark grays. I think that an OD Green would be interesting though. The Reach ODST's I believe were a combination of dark gray, light gray, light green, dark green, and black. Not 100% sure on that though.

I had a question of my own, if anyone cares to input. In Halo 3 ODST, there were different color markings on the guys, (Romeo had blue markings, Mickey had red, and Dutch had yellow.) My question is, do you think that is just personal preference, or does it mark what their class is. (Romeo is a sniper, so color is blue, Mickey is CQC so color is Red, etc.)

It would make sense to me to color coordinate that way when the ODST's showed up, the CO couuld easily identify who does what and issue orders accordingly.

With the ODST suit I am building, I am going to be using the color pallet from urban camo. Personally I like the base pallet for the digital urban camo as it is darker overall. Just a thought.

Nice, Sabre, that is sweet. I am using a set of old school fatigues a friend of mine gave me from up off base. Made my lousy shoulders too small.. GRRRRRRRR!!!!! BUT! Too late to fix them now, will have to wait. Oh well. We'll see how it goes, eh?

Maybe this will help:

I obviously have a lot of painting/weathering left to do and the visor hasn't been mounted yet, but at least you'll have an idea of how it would look in the original spartan green.

Try Gun-Metal Gray for the armor parts. I used it for my ODST Helmet, and matches the color for the In-game ODST's. Don't know why people color their ODST's black...

The only time I've seen ODST use anything else then black/dark grey clothing is when they're not in armour (ref. Halo: Helljumpers), but their armour seems to be a bit personalised, and a suit with dark grey clothing and OD/RG armour plates might be a good combo in the forest, maybe add a couple of different shades to the armour to break up your contoures.

personally I'm going to go with the dark grey w/ dark red markings on my armour, and I'm STILL going to use it for airsoft, though only when in CQC and cityfights where the dark colour might wirk better with the suroundings
