Skope's Mark Vi Build **(9/24) Both Biceps 'glassed**

Just a quick update: progress is being made on the right upper arm as we speak. Those of you watching my blog know I got sucked into Oblivion. :p That game is hella addictive, and I knew it before I started playing it. But I'd slowly been weening myself off of it, and I finally finished the Thieves Guild quests (at 4:30 this morning) so I find it easier to do other things now. I've got the shoulder and outer arm done.

I've found a slightly better way to do things this time (and some of y'all may already do this). I had been cutting out all of the pieces then scoring the folds. I tried inverting those steps and I find it's a bit easier to wrangle. Like I said, to some, this may be old hat ... but as this is a knowledge-sharing environment, I thought I would share my findings (however simple) to the other builders and soon-to-be-builders.

Say ... any way that I can move this thread out of the Noob Forum and into the regular Pep forum?

(y) Dude! I can't believe I just found your thread. That texture on the handplates is so beautiful! I want to touch it so bad! Haha. What part of the painting process gave it that look? Was it the Krylon hammered stuff?

Yeah, that's totally the hammered paint causing that texture. That stuff could have my babies as far as I'm concerned. It's awesome. I'd say it gives the armor a more realistic look over the usual super-smooth finish you usually see. Of course, that's just my personal preference.

I've finished the right upper arm. No pictures, as it would be unnecessary. It looks the same as the other, but in inverse.

Now to resin them. Does anyone know a good spray hard-coat for the first level? I'd like to put something down to help maintain the correct shape, as brushing on resin may distort the lighter pieces.

That's right, I'm still here. ;)

I've resined the right bicep and have started fiberglassing it. It's going rather well during my short time span between the time i get off work and sunset.

Ahhh ...fiberglass cloth is so nice and tidy by comparison (to mat). There's still a few strands to be cleaned up afterward, but nothing a bit of packing tape wrapped around your gloved hand with the sticky side out can't remedy.

As most threads will tell you to do, I cut the cloth into about 3 inch by 3 inch squares with a few 3x1.5 inch rectangles for the narrower bits. Again, the 1" sponge brush works nicely here. Dabbing motions are your best bet. All I have left to glass is the side edges (wings?) around the actual bicep part. I'm still amazed at the structure fiberglass adds to resin. This thing is rock solid in the places I've finished, and the resin isn't completely dry yet. I'll probably be done with this stage by tomorrow night. Then I'll probably throw down a guide coat with the gray primer and have it ready to sand. Seeing as I lack sandpaper, I'll start on the left bicep on Wednesday. I haven't even begun resining it.

I'll have some photos of the progress up soon.

I figured I would show you my high tech facilities. A wire spool partially covered in aluminum foil and littered with spent resin cups and brushes. Sweet, huh?

And here's the drying rack. A shaped dry cleaning hanger (sans horizontal tube) hanging in the outside closet open to the summer breeze.

Now back to task.

Here's what I've got. I finished adding resin and fiberglass, and it's as solid as a rock. I threw down a thin guide coat with some gray primer for when I get to the Bondo/shaping/sanding stage (which might be a while). Again my attention is drawn to the cavernous space inside the bicep-ular region. I've basically shoved an empty resin cup in there to hold it in place for the photo. I've started hitting the gym (it's free with my job, so why not?) as an effort to maybe cut the available burger-storage space down from a Whopper to a Whopper Jr.

Now onward to the right upper arm...

So I got the Red Ring of Death on my Xbox Elite  I just got the box from them (after 15 days of waiting) and promptly packed up ole Bessy and shipped it back to them. 4 hours and counting, Microsoft. Tick tock.

Fiberglass my bicep pleez :p

It looks to be clean and no air bubbles... :D

Bubbles? Obviously, the problem stems from not using a super-duper-crazy-awesome wire spool. :p

Nah, I actually have a few bubbles on the inside during the fiberglassing process, where I guess it really doesn't matter. I can't wait until I can actually afford Bondo and sandpaper (pretty sad, since I'm a salaried employee)

double post aside, I have updates!

Behold ... I have finished fiberglassing both biceps.

Those things have more socks stuffed in them than a 13-year-old girl's bra. Seriously, 2 pairs of crew and one pair of ankle socks taped in each. I'm going to have a fun time making a muscle suit just for my arms.

But yeah, they fit quite well with the right amount of padding. I checked the mobility and it's perfect (presuming I know how far the forearms go). I get paid on Monday, and that means a Dremel rotary tool, some Bondo body filler and sandpaper. Then we are onward to a slick and smooth set of biceps.

I'm gettin' excited.

Pahaha, nice. They're looking good, although I think once you add bondo, you should smooth the "wings" part so it looks more round instead of the paper rectangles taped together. But you were going to do that anyways, right? :-D

BTW Dancing kitteh!

Heck yeah, I am. While I've been waiting on the left piece to dry between coats, I've been sitting here staring at the reference gallery with the right piece and a red felt tip pen in hand, marking everywhere to smooth, build up, or sharpen.

Oh kitteh, how I love your dancing ways

Nice. Lol, I've yet to start anything... I think I"m just going to end up doing an H3 marine or something.

I kind of wish I had started a marine in addition to this, that way I could have something this Haloween (get it?), but it looks like I'm falling back on Indiana Jones this year.

Plenty of folks are building marines, even our 'village elders'. I'll probably start one up before the year is out.

My Xbox is shipping back tomorrow! w00t. it's only been gone 8 days.

Nice!

The only problem with the marine is that it's not as recognizable as the Master Chief... but who gives, maybe I"ll sell it once I'm done and buy one of say, Thor's casts or something.
