1st Build ODST Build

Hey folks!

I've been lurking since 2011 and tried off and on to make a build, now I have the proper time on hand to finish a suit.

I started printing the suit back in march and have gotten pretty much everything ready for priming and painting. ill be following up with proper updates but for now ill just be photo dumping some pictures of the assembled chest and helmet.

The rest of the armor is printed minus the boots. Ill be following up with updates as more progress is made.

Set up a painting and priming booth with my older printers enclosure, makes painting outside perfect now
I managed to get the helmet and visor buck almost completely sanded down and primed for painting today. there's still a few problem spots that ill need to hit with a tiny bit of Bondo. I'm hoping to start getting the base gray paint down tomorrow.

highly recommend a 3d printer enclosure, its been working absolute wonders if you cant get a typical painting booth. Ive been using this one meant for a lk5 i never use anymore and that works great.

Got the helmet sanded down to where I'm satisfied, im leaving small pits here and there for some much needed weathering. I want the look of armor that's gone through a few battles. Need to wait on some more paint to arrive but I was able to get the first base coat down, I'm very happy with the look so far

Moderate progress update, I had started getting everything painted but after some more painting i wasn't happy with how the lines came out.

The colors look fine but there is some spill over and sharp points on the curves. I went ahead and picked up some 2mm tamiya vinyl tape and have recoated the entire helmet with new points. its too rainy today to try to knock it out but should be good tomorrow. For now the helmet is taped off and ready to reapply the black.

I took today instead to rearrange my craft space to give me more work for vacuum forming, managed to get two good visor pulls out for both me and my girlfriends helmets.

Hopefully by next week ill be able to finish off some weathering and detailing, then i can move onto sanding and painting the rest of the suit.

I sourced them off amazon, definitely the easiest spot to find them at least in my area. the local craft shop only sells 10x12 sheets unfortunately.
Heres a link to the exact ones i order, you can get them in smaller sizes if needed.

Thanks for the help all! The PETG has been the biggest hurdle of making visors for myself.

ill keep this in mind if i get a larger machine, but it doesn't look like they sell any in a 18x18 plate.

Back again with a relatively large progress update. I got the yellow striping on the week prior and retouched up the black and grey of the entire helmet to get some crisper lines. I am now much happier with how the whole helmet looks. and set a whole day aside to get the final painting and weathering done.

I might have placed my finger on the front of the yellow striping and smudged it (we wont talk about that whole ordeal of touchup and wet sanding)

If anything it added even more small pits for the weathering stage, so i can accept it as added detail. (definitely not a cope)

From there i went ahead and used some garbage brushes I picked up from the local modeling shop to start adding some metal scratches, and went ahead and filled in the divits on the helmet with metal acrylic paint.

Took time as well to begin painting the chest plate, ill leave that for another post down the line, but also used time in-between coats of primer and base coats to make a few different visors with various colorings. Ill be following up with a different thread indexing the results of different brands of dye on PETG sheets. That being said, I-DYE Poly turquoise I think comes to closest to the visors from H3ODSTs in game models, so that's what I've decided to go with.

Watching the way dat_boi_builds does his visors however made me rethink the way ill be attaching the visor into the helmet, and I've decided to shift over to a Velcro attachment system. This will allow me to change out to different visor colors rather than having to stay with a permanent decision if I find something better down the line in terms of accuracy. All that is left on the helmet detail wise is to touch up a few spots where there was acrylic runoff from the darkwash, doing the clearcoat, and add in the vents to the exposed holes. Otherwise its just attaching the visor and adding the helmet padding that's left.

De retour avec un point d'avancement relativement important. J'ai réalisé les bandes jaunes la semaine précédente et retouché le noir et le gris de tout le casque pour obtenir des lignes plus nettes. J'ai peut-être placé mon doigt sur le devant de la bande jaune et je l'ai maculée (nous ne parlerons pas de toute cette épreuve de retouches et de ponçage humide)

Si quoi que ce soit, cela a ajouté encore plus de petites piqûres pour l'étape de vieillissement, donc je peux l'accepter comme un détail supplémentaire. (certainement pas une solution)

À partir de là, j'ai continué et j'ai utilisé des brosses à déchets que j'ai récupérées dans le magasin de modélisme local pour commencer à ajouter des rayures métalliques, puis j'ai rempli les cavités du casque avec de la peinture acrylique métallique.

J'ai également pris le temps de commencer à peindre le plastron (je vous en parlerai plus tard), mais j'ai aussi profité du temps entre les couches d'apprêt et de base pour fabriquer plusieurs visières de différentes couleurs. Je publierai un autre sujet pour répertorier les résultats de différentes marques de teinture sur des feuilles de PETG. Ceci dit, je pense que la couleur I-DYE Poly turquoise se rapproche le plus des visières des modèles H3ODST du jeu, c'est donc celle que j'ai choisie.View attachment 365618

Cependant, observer la façon dont dat_boi_builds fabrique ses visières m'a fait repenser la façon dont je vais les fixer au casque, et j'ai décidé d'opter pour un système de fixation Velcro. Cela me permettra de changer de couleur de visière plutôt que de devoir choisir une visière fixe si je trouve une meilleure précision plus tard. Jetez un œil à son tutoriel sur les visières en résine ; c'est une excellente montre et on y voit son système de fixation à la fin. Vidéo du tutoriel sur les visières en résine

Il ne reste plus qu'à retoucher quelques endroits où l'acrylique a coulé suite au darkwash, à appliquer le vernis transparent et à ajouter les aérations aux trous exposés. Sinon, il ne reste plus qu'à fixer la visière et à ajouter le rembourrage du casque.

Yep! ill be printing everything for her so she can do all the fun painting and stuff, same suit and files. She wants red instead of yellow, and a silver visor instead of the blue.

Finally have a follow-up! The weather has not been cooperating on my days off to allow me to paint outside, but my chest plate is finally in a state that's presentable, photo dump incoming.

Made the assumption that I wasn't going to be good enough with a brush to make the decals exactly how i wanted them, and i did not like the idea of using printout's either, so I went ahead and picked up a Cricut Joy Xtra. Using the removable vinyl got me a really good stencil that made the process of painting on the decals super easy, and I would highly recommend the process to someone trying to do the same thing.

Did some basic weathering that I'm happy with for the moment, ill be holding off on any clear coat till I know how it looks with the rest of the suit.

Still not sure if I'll be adding any sort of callsign to the center grey area.

All the decals came from the super useful Halo 3: ODST Decals and Details thread, if you want to match the color the closest to what's used on the rookie cosplay guide Yeti White from the army painter paint series is almost 1:1, amazon has it specifically in a pack HERE , but I'm sure your local hobby/miniature shop may have it in single bottles if you don't want a pack of different paint hues.

For anyone with a cricut, heres a few links to my project files for you guys to use in your builds, if you dont want to go through the process of doing it yourself. The UNSC logo goes down in two parts to allow for the most detail, just make sure you hide/unhide which one you do/don't want to cut.
