Anyone have any suggestions as to how to keep the paint from bubbling under temperature swings?

I keep things in my hot water cupboard when Im letting them dry. What brand of gold is it? Gold paint is usually quite horrible, never cures properly etc etc, the helmet looks like its shaping up nicely though :)

Well I was screwing around with the finishes on it, and what you see there is a hybrid coat of 3 different gold/metallic finishes.

In all, the front face plate has ~4-5 coats on it.

What I think I'll do on the final final, is hit it with a sealant gloss first and let that completely cure overnight before hitting it with any kind of spraypaint.

Gloss -> gold -> gold -> gloss

or something to that effect.

I'm still kind of disappointed with the jawline and the base of the skull. If I get the time, I'm definitely going to try to touch up those seams before the molding supplies get here. I really want this guy to be perfect before mold making. That and I've nearly emptied my gallon of bondo I've been using on this guy. Eshh!

That's probably your problem there. I usually wait 24 hours before coating with a different paint. If the coat underneath is still gassing off, it will bubble the layer above it. I know it probably doesn't matter though, as you're just giving it a quick coat to see what a finished one might look like.
I think you're doing a good job with the shape. A few people have done this helmet now, and so far no-one has got it quite perfect yet. I think perhaps you might want to consider tightening up the angles in the eye ports, but its looking sweet as it is.

I figure a full dry cycle on spray paint cant be more than 1-2 hours, and I figure I waited about that long, but I'm sure I rushed it in parts.

Yeah the eyes are a big pain in the rear, but I can't really do much about them because of the way I originally cast the helmet. I can grind down that solid plastic on the inside, but it'd be a huge undertaking, and I'm not sure how well that will translate into a final mold, so the may get a blind eye turned to that section. yeah, they are a good 3/8th inch too thick on the sides, but as long as they are symetrical, I don't think TOO many people will notice.

I'm actually a little more worried about the brow. I don't think you can see the full effect in the pictures ,but it has a strange sloping curve to it which will not fly by any means, so thats definately on the list of clean up items. Shoot. I could spend another 3 months just "cleaning up" this helmet. Thats the curse of this art. haha

I'm nearly ready to show some early prototypes of the gloves and gauntlets. They seem to be working a LOT better than I figured they would for a first attempt.

Actually, the imperfections on the paint make it look more real, it adds weathering, for lack of a better word. It's a pretty neat effect.

mmm, it's not the greatest quality picture, but trust me, it doesnt look that great up close and personal.

Update: Attached left side ear piece, filled out back end of helmet, and started fine sanding of the left and right side cheekbones.

The end is near! Hooray!

I've almost got the bicep pieces in good shape as well.

Crazy job dude!! Can't wait to see it finnished. :D

 i think this website is becoming an ironman website...

jk lol looks great!!

Well hey, as long as we're making armor that looks BA and awesome, we can go Iron Man too.

Because the armor looked god-like in the movie.

RAGE!

EXPLETIVE!

JGREER I HATE YOU!

So I go to demold the bicep piece on my ironman costume, and this POS silicone just shreds to nothing. This sculpt was perfect. I mean absolutely pristine. Now I'll spend at least another week cleaning it back up. Such a pain.

Screw it, I'm ordering my mats from smooth-on right now.

*steam whistle blows*

Well boys, lock up shop. It's time to put this dead horse to rest.

Since I can't seem to find a viable solution to the "back of the helmet" issue I've been having for so long, I'm pulling the plug on the Mark III - MkI (for me) Ironman helmet.

I've seen so many fantastic pep ironman helmets, that my new route is going to be Spase-esque. Build one badass mother pep helmet and run the detail work till my fingers fall off. Perfectly symmetrical helmet, and a creator with his sanity left intact.

I'll continue to update this thread with more suit progress - I'm fairly confident that my sculpting skills are adequate to reproduce the rest of the armor.

To come - boot sculpt 80% done. This should be an interesting diversion to my helmet issues.

That's a shame, sorry to hear it's not working for you. It's an awesome sculpt you've got so far.

Have you been looking into which pep file to use?
The one belakor posted a link to in his IM thread looks the best I've seen yet.

Yup thats the one I'm going with. Just downloaded the files this morning.

Unlike the Mjolnir helm, this form is so close to human anatomy that it really does need to be a two part helmet to account for undercuts in the chin and back of the skull. This is just about the only way to keep the helmet sized very close to the movie version.

I also had a great idea about a "voice changer" for the helmet.

1. Get the Optimus Prime helmet from Target - 20$
2. Rip out the electronics, add an amplifier, mount speakers *somewhere?*
3. .....
4. PROFIT!

EDIT: Oh and if anyone wants to trade a mjlonr helmet (scrap pull/whatnot) for what I've got done so far, PM me. Yall might have some use for this as a base for a proper IM helm.

:D

GREAT FIND:

Advance auto parts store sells 9-bulb LED flashlights (with batteries!) for 2.50.

As skeptical as I was about these POS's, they are super bright, and super compact. Rip out the circuits, wire up a battery pack, and the active elements of the system end up being less than 1/2" thick (see palm repulsors).

I bought six of em just in case I F something gutting the first couple.

So I thought I'd go ahead and start updating my IM thread.

Here are a couple of shots of the arm pieces I've been working on. There hasn't been any clean up done yet, but that shouldn't be too much work.

I'm thinking these may be a little bulky / a little too beefy for ironman. A hybrid mk3 / hulk buster suit? Mk IV: Ironman hits the gym? :p

Constructive crits? Destructive crits? Lets have em!

Haloween: 11 weeks and counting!

Enjoy.

looks good. Although I think the bicept may be a bit large. I have been working on one of these myself. If you want the files I would be happy to share. I have almost peped out a full set of armor. I also have the cammillo files, which may help. here is a side by side of the two bicepts, if it will help you sir.
