Age discussion

This has already been discussed w/ a poll and a lengthy thread and honestly untill a club charter or official club rules are made up, its a moot point.

but to toss in my 2 cents i agree with Vexonia. look at it from a logistical point of view.

16: Yeah you can drive and work. Not to be a jerk, but so what? YOURE STILL A MINOR. And to reiterate what lots of people have said, if something happens to you us older guys are responsible. I can empthize with wanting to be a part of the "official club" , but think about it if you did something stupid and hurt yourself/ got in trouble would you really want to put that burden on the rest of us? I would hope not

18: You are considered an adult. Dont like youre parents rules? Move out. Get a better job, join the military, go to college, get a credit card, take a year off from school, buy porn, the list goes on. You are now your own person legally and can make your own decisions. Get hurt/ do something stupid? Its not going to fall on everyone else.

Like i said there was another thread/ poll and once these points were brought up, even most of the younger, under-age members, agreed that it would be better to have at least 18 as the minimum. Which I thought was very mature of them. Hell some 16 year olds may be more mature than i am at times, but the law dosnt care and thats what matters.

Wow i typed alot, haha. I'm done beating the horse now (lol Vex)

I'm 16, as i said earlier, i don't mind if its 18+ to join, by the time i get to go to any official 405th parades etc, ill be 18! and finished school. I've already had 5 jobs, I'm driving, I don't live with my parents. I'm all set already!
I think its a good idea to make it 18 and over because, lets face it a lot of <18 are idiots (then again a lot of 18> are idiots too  ) not trying to offend anyone.
Plus there will be a lot less paper work involved for the powers that be, as well as us youngbloods.

after spending much of my lunch hour reading this debate between young and old. I personally think that we can compromise. If under 18 You need a parent, regardless. now that might not seem like a compromise but listen. By getting your respective guardians involved we ad the 405th have a chance to recruit more members i.e. your PARENTS (possibly their friends but not likely). I know not all parents choose to bond with their children in such manners, but if the parents came along to events they could wear 405th shirts (or even the recruit uniform), be liable for their kids, and help swell our ranks. If said guardians do not wish to actively participate that is fine, but i'm willing to bet that the more involved they get that even once you turn 18 they might keep with it themselves which would just perpetuate our goal.

i tend to ramble, and can be hard to follow i apolagize if thats the case with what i said above.

That sounds good to me

Everything is a possibility at this. Not everything is feasible. The alternative of allowing underage members to join with parent consent, or now only if their parent also joins... you'd have to remember, that if that were the stipulation of allowing underage members to join, was that their parents are here also, then the underage person would have to know that they still couldn't attend and event without their parent present.

The SCA has Family memberships, allowing a Guardian to join, and then the underage member be placed underneath their membership. The Guardian is the responsible party... What does the SCA do when the Guardian is no longer a member... then the underage member also looses their membership. The guardian must be present at all times during an event?

Yes NO Guardian NO underage member at the event. So if let the Guardian join and sponcer (sorry) the underage member
and the Guardian show up with the underage member member in tow. (We need a singe up sheet ) Singes it WITH the underage member we are all good (ID at the time of singe it) If they do not sign in there are there BUT NOT AT THE 405th event.

All good?

only difference being that the SCA doesn't require a wearable costume.

Wrong again. To be at an event you need to be in costume from 600 to 1650. :p

I was implying the costume approval process, but rather than rephrase it, I'll trudge along down this line of reasoning... (I'm used to you being a few steps ahead).

The parents are expected to make a halo costume for themselves and go through the normal costume approval process?

Or is there a fast track for folks that want to be members and have kids of eligible age?

If there's no fast track, I see no problem with it, assuming we have the backing of a notary making the parenthood distinction in a legal statement.. rather than expect us to be liable for ID's or faked parenthood. I see it as being potentially difficult for young members, but at least it wouldn't be impossible.

Mike I am just slow...What is implying. oh I got it :)

The SCA uses the notary thing (Like IF the last name are deferent) :D

And I would be happy if the parents buy a 405 tee and send in $10.00 per Kid for a Filmily Plan. :D

Good.. now keep going.

The parents wearing tshirts go march alongside with us in a parade. No problems with that?

Ok, so now my last name is Smith, and my underage friend's last name is wesson.. so if I apply as his parent, and he claims that his last name is Smith, it slides through, right? because he has no license to verify his last name.

The bonus is that I get to wear a 405th tshirt in the parade, get face recognition, and have the priviledges that are inherent with membership.

Win, win, win for those without scruples, and a significant loss for the club if that kid ever has anything happen to them..

OK, I may start to rant to bit, so be warned. (I am under 18 [14] so take that for what it's worth),

We will still be allowed to post on/view the forum, as previously stated. Going to events such as CONs and the like will be hectic, whether us younger members are allowed to attend as official 405th members, (however a 405th member will be defined) adding young people into the equation just complicates that more. Liability is always a major concern when dealing with people under 18 (at least it is in the US), especially when dealing with things like this, where the 405th could be blamed for accidents or injures. We all need to think about what kind of materials we use to make these costumes, the fiberglass resin alone has already made one of our members very sick and could be a health risk to us all if we don't take the proper safety measures before using these materials. The video that Sean posted of the kid using fiberglass in his house should be a lesson on safety for us all. The rules would have to be spelled out in great detail and there would have to be some kind of form that freed all 405th members from responsibility if something were to go wrong at one of the events.

As for the parent thing, It seems like a good idea but I doubt that most parents would like to join, unless they have some background in video game/prop making. I am sure that my parents would not be interested in making costumes, that's not to say that they don't support me, it's just not their thing, I'm willing to bet that there are some parents out there who would be more than willing to join the 405th and help their children out with their hobby. With more parents getting involved, perhaps, more young members would be safer and might even learn a thing or two. Many hands make light work, right?

Not to contradict my first statement, but, I think the age limit should be 18, for events. Even though there are some very mature young people, and some very immature ones too, it would be very difficult to outline exactly what would be required of younger members. Some, most, young people on this sight do not have a suit of armor that they, themselves, made. Then again, there are quite a few adults who are also armor-less.

I believe the age should be 18, for now. Once the mods, and other members who are contributing, get the charter situation smoothed out I think it is very plausible for young people, <18, be allowed to join and attend Cons and all other 405th events. But, as of now, the charter isn't finished, as Spase said, this issue is not at the top of the priority list at the moment.

My beating hand is growing weary, so I think I'll give this horse a break for now.

I know, I wrote a lot (you were warned!!!) most people probably won't even read everything I wrote, but if you did, I thank you, even if you don't agree, thanks for hearing me out and listing to what I had to say.

That is were the notery coms in.

"Win, win, win for those without scruples, and a significant loss for the club if that kid ever has anything happen to them.."

I do not get this, NO 405th T-shirt in the parade. Full costume only.

Mike just because Little Johnny (16 1/2 YO) is NOT in the 405th he is going to go to Mega Con with 3,000 of his friends in his Halo Armor that he got last week at Jim's costume armor shop. He is there if we let hem go or not. In he get stab, shot or felt up by the creeps, He is there.

A club of like mined peps did not let hem in there 18 and older club so no one had his back.

Get it, We are here to support and help each other not say well yea you look cool and all but you can not stand with in 10 feet of our booth if you are under 18 ( OVER THE TOP, I KNOW ).

Gammerguy55 "Spase said, this issue is not at the top of the priority list at the moment."

Yea I know I to am a Power To Be (One of the 9) I to working on the charter. I like a senator or House Member have seen the there is a lot of Kids here. I think they need to be bart of the Cos Play part the the 405th. If you get down to in that is why most of us are here. To find out how to make and were your too cool Halo armor and Costumes. It sure as hell not to meet chicks ( No offence ot you 7 nice girls that are here doing your part as good 405th members. :) )

So if most of the 405th board is kids and there here to Cos-Play WTF Why can't we ( The 9 ) work a little harder to have 12 + in the club. Look at it this way, out of ALL of you 30 ish are going to D-Con the First 405th Event ever! only 30 ish out of the 2,000 peps on the 405th Board. I do not see how 1 or 2 405th Jr, with Parent in tow is going to bring down the 405 th.

We are there at D-con, it is there event. We are the in the USA under there Laws. We are there in the Hotel under there Rules. We or I did not say or imply that we are in charge or take in responsibility other then Guests.

So why is it that you ( Deadguy ) feal that we can NOT work of the age thing? Look at the Boy scouts, Girl Scouts, 4 H, Youth sports, Am. CV. War, WWII and all the rest.

If you (The 9) feel like you can, or want to, make it so kids could join I think that would be great. There is a lot of talent here, both over and under 18. I was trying to present an idea that would make it easier for you (The 9) to piece something together about the age before D-Con. I would love to go to D-Con, I don't know how many under 18 people would be able to attend though.
